"Mom, do you have to go?" I asked her, moving around the house, following her while she searched for her phone charger. It was the day before new year's eve and all my plans of celebrating new year with my family and loved ones had virtually crashed in my head.

"Yes, Jake's exhibition date just got shifted and you know we can't do anything" she lifted a cushion off the couch to see if she had left it there, but there was nothing.

"Come on, you have your friends here" she told me after finding her charger lying underneath the TV cabinet. "Take care of yourself and give my regards to Lisa" she hugged me and went outside to place the bags in the cab. "Call everyday" dad reminded me and placed a kiss on my head. The only one who was least bothered about leaving was Jake.

"Bye sis!" he said after sitting in the taxi and putting his headphones on. "Bye" I said and they sped away into the distance.

I was alone at home as Lisa had gone to buy a present for our school Secret Santa ritual. I had told her to buy the latest edition some-known-brand nail polish set on my behalf for Scarlett because I was too lazy to shop for beauty products myself. What, their variety confuses you more than a trigonometry problem!

I sat and printed some recently taken photos so as to stick them on our wall when I wondered who would have gotten my name for secret Santa and what I would get.

I went down to get clear tape to stick those snaps and stuffed the last pieces of brownies in my mouth on my way back. Dan, like an angel, had not forgotten to bring those on christmas. It was when I was licking my chocolatey fingers that I thought of calling Dan to check if he could make it to the firework show I had asked him about.

I called his landline and there were many rings before it went into the 'leave a message' mode. I called again but no one picked up. Surely there was no one at home but I really wanted to talk to him as we had not met after Christmas.

I left the calling for later, knowing that he must have gone out. I could have called his mobile but thought better than to disturb.

It was after an hour that I heard Lisa push the door handle and then knock after finding it locked. I went and opened the door to find her struggling with many bags in her hands. She looked like one of those girls they show on shopping mall posters when there's a sale.

"Atleast now could you tell me who are you gifting this to? I went to almost fifty shops before finding something you told me to buy at the lowest price. I saved so many bucks" she said in pride. "Great! You'll come to know who that person is once we get back to school" I said and took the bags from her and started emptying its contents to find what was stocked in them.

To my surprise, those bags contained every possible item a diva could wish for, ranging from crop tops and dresses to lip gloss and foundation. "Lisa, you sure this is all yours? You didn't pick up someone else's right?" I asked her, picking each top and eyeing the price tag.

"Relax, all of this and everything is within a hundred bucks" she bounced on the couch and switched on the TV. "That's it?" I asked, my mouth open in disbelief. "You aren't missing any extra digit or a zero right" I asked her. "No darling, it's all part of this scheme called 'Your best friend goes shopping for you and returns with great savings'. My bargaining skills are inexplicable" she said happily and opened a chips packet to munch on.

"And guess what?" she turned to me. "What?" I asked her. "I saw Scarlett there. Like I couldn't believe it! Remember when she had said that she never goes to places where they sell brands for wholesale rates" she mused. I felt like someone had slapped me hard across the face. "Scarlett?" I asked.
