I noticed that it was kind of confusing as to the limits and extent of Jared's hair and his magic, so here's a chapter explaining it all (it's a really long chapter oops). I hope this helps!
Elaborating on what I hinted at in the first Jared chapter, Jared can control what he does and does not burn to a minimal degree. He can transfer some of his magic outside of his own being and place it in a specific area, small enough where it's contained, but large enough for it to exist and move around. This is called Stationary Magic. One example would be his room. His hair was still fire, but nothing in his room would burn if his hair touched it, for example his bed. He also has a bathroom connected to his room that he allows his Stationary Magic to seep into. Like I said in the first Jared chapter, he can't burn what is on him. This is called Locationary Magic. For example, he can't burn his clothes or gauze, nor can he burn things such as a hood or a backpack so long as he wore it. This applies to all other elementals.
Elementals are created by nature phenomena and are extremely rare. Every elemental is created a different way, and only humans can be elementals. Every elemental has the ability to move their element (much like the benders of avatar). Fire elementals can control fire and lava, water elementals can control water and ice, earth elementals can control plant life and rocks/gems, and air elementals can control air and clouds. Elementals have minimal control over what they do and do not harm with their hair. When concentrated, they can create a sort of shield for anything at any given time. This shield can be expanded and more accessible the more their power is used and accepted. In Jared's case, he has almost no grasp of his shield. He subconsciously creates it to a minimal degree, and is able to not burn down the house, but still can burn something like the couch and the coffee table.
Every elemental is born with four types of magic: Stationary magic, Locationary magic, Projectionary magic, and Mutualationary magic. Stationary [station] magic allows you to keep your powers neutral in a specific place. Locationary [location] magic allows the things on you currently not to be affected by your magic. Projectionary [project] magic allows you to direct your magic at a specific target. Mutualationary [mutual] magic allows for your non-neutralized magic (whatever happens when your hair touches anything) to be neutralized over those you trust. Mutualationary magic is temporary, and only lasts for those you trust/love at the moment of contact.
*Something that happens when any elementals come in contact with one another is steam. No one knows why, it's just how it is.
*Stationary zones can house any elemental, regardless of who created it. If, say, a water elemental created a Stationary zone, an earth elemental would still experience the same neutral power as the creator of the zone.
Elemental guide:
Water: Elemental speciality- Creation. Hair type- water/ice
Water Elementals are the most common (if common at all) have the ability to heal and create. Their stationary magic allows for them to be in control of what they create. Without this, water and ice would free flow wherever their hair touched. For example, in the first Jared chapter, Evan is reluctant to pull his hood down. This is because his hair is more spontaneous with its power, meaning that if anything that wasn't shielded by his Locationary magic touched it, ice shards would shoot out of said object, or, if it was living, it could alternatively grow to its best health possibly beyond, ironically causing more health problems than it was preventing/destroying (Living things don't necessarily have this reaction; they can have either the ice spikes or extreme growth, and sometimes even both). When water elements use their Projectionary magic, they can heal almost any wound. An example would be when Evan heals Jared's scars (this is more accidental than anything, but is still Projectionary magic).
Earth: Elemental speciality- Liberation. Hair type- vines/gems
Earth Elementals have the ability to liberate and free. Their stationary magic allows them to keep a neutral environment from their powers. Without this, anything their hair touched would be broken apart and reveal the inner being of itself. For example, if an earth elemental's hair touches a painter, they would physically break apart to reveal, let's say, a bird that spread beautiful paint swatches and patterns everywhere, thus setting the artist free forever. If it touched, lets say, an oak tree, it would break apart into thousands of different memories, things trees keep pent up inside spiritually, like the unjust of being shaded by a larger tree, or the joy of a small child climbing it's branches. Using their Projectionary magic, earth elementals can cure mental illnesses, the one type of illness water elementals cannot cure. They can also free anything of bad memories and past pain/regrets.
Fire: Elemental speciality- Destruction. Hair type- Fire
Fire Elementals are the second rarest elemental type and have the ability to destroy anything their hair touches. Their stationary magic allows them to keep a secure location without the worry of burning anything. Their Projectionary magic allows them to hold and direct fire to anyone and anything. Fire elementals are much more straight forward than other elementals. They can also destroy something mentally or internally, without the victim even realizing it. Even so, their Projectionary magic isn't necessarily bad. Fire elementals have one main weakness, which is natural water caused not by a water elemental. When water touches fire elemental outside of a Stationary zone, they immediately burn.
Air: Elemental speciality- Deception. Hair type- Clouds/anything the elemental chooses
Air Elementals are the rarest elemental type and have the ability to deceive and cause disorder. Their stationary magic allows them to create a secure location that is not affected by their chaos. Without this, anything their natural hair touched would become corrupted. Air elementals have more control over their Projectionary magic than any other element, silently making people fall under their deception. Air elementals can shape shift their hair, allowing them to disguise as normal humans or other elementals. Not much is known about these elementals, seeing as they're so incredibly rare.
*Only fire elementals have a specific weakness. Every other elemental has a different weakness depending on the elemental itself, not necessarily their assigned element.
Elementals are extremely rare, and often discriminated against. In Jared's case, he is often called a freak and a mistake, and is abused by his parents. Evan on the other hand is accepted by his mother, and is given the necessary things he needs to live. This difference in acceptance causes a difference in shield grasp. Evan, although still very afraid of his affects, has a much stronger grasp of his shield than Jared.
I hope this helps clear some stuff up! In the mean time, please feel free to comment any questions you still have, and I'll answer them as best as I can. Thank you so much for the support, I love you all so much you have no idea! :)
