chapter 9

Adams point of view

"Here" I said to her as I handed her the aspirin I was sure she needed. "I didnt expect you to wake up so early"

"How did I get here? Adam I dont remember much about what happened last night."

I didnt know where to begin. I was still incredibly angry with her over her behavior last night. She flirted with another man right in front of my face and let him grope her on the dance floor while they were dancing to one of my songs.

"you were dancing with your new friend and then you bolted out of the room and the next thing I knew you were passing out in the lobby. It was either bring you home with me or let you go home with octopus hands..So here you are."

"My clothes..Adam I dont have on my clothes"

"you dont have on your clothes because you puked all over them and my car on the way home. I cleaned you up the best I could but you should probably go get a shower.. I have your clothes clean now. I washed them as soon as I took them off of you."

She started blushing. I could tell she was embarrassed.

"Thank you.. I'm sorry about your car"

"No biggie...Shelby do you mind telling me what the hell you thought you were doing last night?"

"Adam I was so angry with you.."

"why? Over Christina..Shelby I already told you that happened way before I even met you. I admit the comment I made to you was stupid. But Shelby I think by now you know you arent just another one night stand. "

"Adam How am I supposed to know that? Christina Aguilera has made it known that she wants you back in her bed. Thousands of beautiful women want you in their bed.. And you arent in my bed..."

"I'm not in your bed because I am trying to show you some respect which is something you arent really doing for yourself much lately"

"do you not think it would be extremely easy for me to say to hell with it all and just take you to bed.. But honey we both know what could happen if i did that. I'm willing to take those risks for myself but I am not going to take them for you. Can you honestly tell me that you are willing to give up your shot on the show..your chance to make it in the music business just to be with me?"

Her silence was all the answer that I needed.

"get your shower. I'll bring you by Maries house to change and we can ride to rehearsals together."

The drive was pretty much a silent one. The radio was on to break the deafening quiet. "Moves like Jagger" came on and I quickly changed the channel. The next song playing was " I want your sex" so again I had to change the station. "I cant get no satisfaction" was the next song I found. I just gave up and turned off the radio.

We arrived at the studio and the group gathered together . It was time to pair my team up for the battle rounds. I remembered what Blake had told me the very first day of the season about throwing her under the bus and making sure she went home. As much as I may have been tempted to do that after her stunt last night i knew my heart was never going to allow that.

Much of the day passed and it was her turn. "Russ, I'm pairing you up with Shelby and the song you will be singing is "dont you wanna stay" from Jason Aldean and Kelly Clarkson

Shelby's point of view

Adam announced that I would be singing with Russ and that we would be singing a duet from Jason Aldean and Kelly Clarkson. I felt my eyes well with tears because at that moment I realized that Adam did truly care about me..and this was his way of telling me that.

My mind flashed back to a day last week during rehearsals , back before Christina's drama and my stupidity came between us.

Adam and I had stayed up late the night before talking on the phone and the song had come on the radio. i was singing it over the phone to Adam teasing him that I was gonna call the radio station and dedicate it to him.  The next day in rehearsal he looked at me with a strange expression on his face then shot the pianist a strange look.

"Sing with me Shelby" he said softly as the music started to play

Every word we sang brought us closer and closer together, Adams eyes piercing mine, every word that fell from his lips dripping with true emotion. When the song finished we were less than an inch apart..our mouths so close I could feel his breath mixing with mine. I hadnt realized at the time what Adam was trying to say to me...
