The openings and endings (songs) indicate the start and the end of an anime episode. Of course, sometimes the openings and endings might be not in some episodes for reasons like the anime is in its climax, the producers wanted to focus on more introduction in the first episode or that they probably don't want to bore their viewers in the first episode. But still, the opening and ending songs are widely noticed by anime viewers and it is no doubt a significant part in anime to them.
These anime opening and ending songs give us anime audience an exposure to new Japanese songs that we never hear before especially when most of the viewers nowadays are not from Japan where the songs are based from. These songs give us a new option of songs to listen from, instead the songs that we listen to. These songs are beneficial to their (songs) creators - the bands or singers who make the songs. These songs (oops, same first two words in two sentences in a row) promote the singers and bands who created the lovely and amazing songs. Even some groups more specifically like idol groups for example - µ's - the school idol group from the anime "Love Live School Project" which promotes their voice actors who performs their songs in live shows. Even after disbanding, these voice actors are able to venture into their own careers with much ease thanks to their involvement in the anime series which is well-known in the anime community. For musicians who create songs, once their songs are popular and likened by lots of people, their reputation will increase hugely and they will be able to continue their music careers more easily as they get to receive fame, attention and more revenue too from their other releases thanks to their fans and supporters they have gained mostly from their works that appeared in anime shows.
Some people judge anime shows by just evaluating their songs in the anime. In my opinion, this is not a good way to judge the anime in any ways at all as the songs and the anime are created differently. Of course they are created differently since they are created by different people. Also, the plot will differ from the songs' lyrics and tunes. Even so, you will still notice that the songs will be still related to the anime's theme like romance and action etc. After all, just try to think that the songs as an extension since they are created differently (the songs not entirely based on the anime show's plot) and both of them are different entities. (different things)
Anime opening and ending songs make the shows nicer to watch when they are good. Sometimes they are so good that you want to get them in your devices to listen on the go whenever you are outside and wanna have the anime vibes. If so, please try to buy them from official stores, no matter it is digital or non-digital, since you can help the songs producers and support them to create more wonderful and lovely tunes for the world to listen. I also like Tsuki Ga Kirei and Oregairu (both seasons) openings and endings that I got them too.
There are songs in anime movies but there are not called opening and ending songs. In each animation movie, there are lots of songs around 15 to 30 songs. These songs are in a pack together as one called OST. (OST - Original Soundtrack - means an album of songs or a song that is original.) You might be disappointed if some of these songs are actually instrumental sounds with no vocals and only lasts for 30 seconds to just over a minute. But don't be disheartened, just take it as a chance for you to listen and discover new music especially instrumental music for those who never heard this type of music before. Who knows? You might even like this music and other instrumental music!
Anyways, anime opening and ending songs are an important part of anime shows. It gives the vibes of the anime and hints the theme of the anime. It also promotes Japanese singers and bands in their music careers. It gives you a chance to listen a new type of music - Japanese music which most who don't live in Japan don't listen to. After all, I hope you can at least give brief idea of anime opening and ending songs and what it is for and so on.
