The ride was the same as usual: loud music and lots of bickering, accompanied by just a hint of friendship and strategy. I was honestly relieved when Caleb said it was time to stop for the night."Who has the booze?"
"Finnley, let's stay sober for a change." Noah replied, holding the taller one down. Sadie rolled her eyes at the two boys and started dumping sleeping bags on people. "Sadie, what the fuck?" I asked, trying to escape from the never ending blue-ness that I was now covered in. "Just explain the sleeping positions, Matarazzo." She replied, pulling Noah off of Finn. I rolled my eyes to Caleb and he did the same back. "Okay then, Noah, Finn, Caleb, that side, Sadie, we take this side."
"How come you two get the bigger side?" Caleb complained, laying down his bag and pillow. "Because fuck you, that's why." Sadie shot back, already in her sleeping bag. "Language, also, please don't."
"Just go to bed already." Noah tiredly said. I faced the wall as Caleb took out the light and was asleep soon after.I woke everyone up the next morning and, after about ten minutes of bickering, Noah made us breakfast. Finn took the front seat, leaving me in the back with Sadie and Noah as we went over the plan again. "So the cabin has four exits, not including the windows, one on each side of the house. Security guards are covering East, West, and South." I nodded along to Sadie's explanation while eating my breakfast. Noah took over for her. "Gaten will be on North-East, Finn on North-West, Caleb on South-West, and Sadie on South-East. I will go in for the kill. You guys will have to take out the security guards. I'll enter through the West entrance, its guard will be taken out by me and, in case of a problem, Finn." Sadie took over again. "I will take out the East guard and Caleb will take out South. North doesn't have a guard but can only be opened from the inside. Copy?"
"Copy." We all replied at the same time. "We'll reach the cabin by nightfall." Caleb supplied. My stomach had twisted when Sadie told us Caleb would take out a guard. It's not his thing and I feared for his life.We arrived in the woods at sundown, the twilight creating a cover for us while we carefully unpacked camo and weapons. Caleb, naturally, just went with a knife and a simple .22 handgun. And he grabbed the camo bandana but honestly, we were expecting that. I had three different guns and a knife because no one, including myself, trusts me with my own life. When the sun was fully down and the only light cane from the stars peeking through the leaves, we took our posts.
The time between when we took our posts and Sadie's signal signifying that we had to attack can't have been more than five minutes, but it felt like an eternity. I was just starting to think that maybe the others had been taken out when I heard an owl, and heard yelling not too long after. We'd barricaded the Northern door so it couldn't be opened, but I still had a gun in each hand just in case.
The yelling stopped after a final gunshot was heard, followed by dead silence. I walked towards the Eastern door to go back inside, like we'd planned, and regroup before leaving for home. "Okay, Sadie, Finn, Gaten, where's Caleb?" Noah looked around the small cabin while my heart stopped beating for a second. I ran outside, looking around frantically to try and find my best friend. I only found him because of his flashlight. He'd cleverly turned it on so we could find him in case he blacked out. "Finn! I found him!" I quickly yelled, my voice breaking a few times as I tried to get Caleb to wake up. "Caleb. Caleb. Caleb come on man this isn't funny! Caleb!" I shook him by his shoulders but all that happened was that his head rolled back and forth.
Finn pushed me to the side the second he arrived so he could look at Caleb. "Sadie, light. I still have a pulse and he's still breathing. Injuries are blunt force trauma to the left occipital bone and sharp force trauma to the left femur. Judging by the amount of blood, it didn't hit the femoral artery." I let out a sight in relief while Finn patched him up as well as he could before asking Noah and I to carry Caleb back to the van. I did everything in a weird trance, the only thing going through my head was that I could've lost him.
And I realized that I had to come clean.
I drove us to a cheap motel in silence.
