Chapter Six

Well as far as knowing I was gonna end up a rebel

Caleb's words ghosted through my head. Why did he specifically add that. Why would he go out of his way to say that it was about becoming a rebel. I was up all night thinking about this. I was still up by the time the sun began to rise. I heard Sadie and Noah sneak back in from their nightly escape and finally got out of bed. Screw it, they could wake up early for a change. "Caleb. Wake up before I start screaming." I said while shaking his shoulders. "Already? What time is it?"
"Early."
"Yeah, I knew that."
"Well then, get up."

I walked into the hallway and yelled at everyone to wake up. Sadie immediately sprinted out of her bedroom in her sweatpants and hoodie to basically strangle me. "Gaten it's 5 am what the fuck are you doing?" She aggressively asked while shoving me into a wall. "Waking everyone up. Morning air ought to do you well. I mean, you get out so little." I said while smiling at her. She was still visibly annoyed but spun around to go get changed.

"Okay I got a reply from Luna. Millie seems to have gone to Mexico. Probably to Grace and Maddie's. Sol knows a guy at the border. It may be risky but I think we should be able to get you two to Mexico to find her and bring her back." I looked up to see who she was pointing at only to realize she meant Caleb and I. "Wait why us and not one of you guys? We're not fighters or medics." Caleb protested. "Well no but you're also not wanted in Texas, which is the only place we can give you a safe passage." Noah explained. "So you want us two, your driver and your carpenter, to carry out a mission we'd usually leave to our fighters and medic?" I carefully asked. Sadie just nodded before she pulled out the map from under the couch.

"So Grace told me that she and Maddie were here," Sadie circled a small town in Mexico, "so I think that's a good starting point. You can cross the border here," she continued while pointing at a part in Texas, "and ta-" Caleb interrupted her while following the roads with his finger. "Take this route, barely any highways, no witnesses. When we hit a place, we hit it fast and drive off. Gaten, you're gonna have to rob things solo while I keep the engine running."

"Caleb, really? You're just gonna go along with this?" I asked him. "Well I mean, what's the worst that could happen?"
"What's the-wha-what's the worst that could happen? Oh I don't know, maybe, you could get killed."
"That threat is always there. I mean just look at last mission."
"Exactly, last mission you got hurt, I don't want that to happen again."
"Oh but every time you got hurt was okay?"
"I'm not saying that but seeing you hurt hurts me less than seeing you dead!"
"So what? I don't care!"
"Whoa, Caleb, what the hell happened between you two?" Finn asked, laying a hand on Caleb's shoulder. "Mind your own business, Wolfhard." I snapped at him. He threw up his hands in surrender and leaned back again. "Gaten, someone has to do it."
"Well it's not gonna be us, Caleb."
"Are you really so selfish that you'd be fine if Sadie and Noah went but not if you went?"
"I don't care about myself, I'm not okay with the fact that you're going!"
"Well why not? Do you think I'm a fucking baby or something?"
"Dammit, Caleb, I'm in love with you!"

The silence that fell was broken after a minute by Sadie. "We're just gonna-" Sadie pointed over her shoulder to the door and the three of them were gone in two seconds. Somewhere I wanted to follow them but I decided I didn't want to. "L-language?" Caleb carefully said, trying to ease the tension. "You just said 'fuck' you hypocrite."
"Whatever, Matarazzo."
"Whatever, McLaughlin."
"So..."
"Yeah..."
"Did you mean it?"
I scratched the back of my neck and looked down to the ground. "Well, yeah, I guess." I muttered. "You guess? I need an answer, Gaten."
"Fine, I meant it. Happy now?"
"How long?"
"What?"
"How long have you felt like that?"
"Somewhere last year. I guess one day I woke up and I saw you and a switch had been flicked. And I just felt like that."
"And you're absolutely sure of your feelings?"
"Well, yeah?"
"Good." Caleb suddenly moved forward and kissed me.
