It's really weird to share a room with someone who's unconscious, especially when that person is your friend. It's even weirder when you wake up with that person curled up at your side while you didn't share a bed with them.I guessed Caleb had just had a nightmare or something and decided to climb into bed with me for comfort. I smiled down at him and wrapped an arm around his shoulders. But that smile quickly faded when I remembered the promise I'd made to myself the previous night. I had to tell Caleb.
I softly shook him awake and we groggily got up while I banged on the walls to wake up Sadie, Noah, and Finn. We quickly got dressed and checked out before getting in the van again. "So what happened last night after I blacked out?" Caleb asked us when we were on our way again. "I patched you up and Gaten drove us to the motel. That was basically it. Hit was successful." Finn summed up, not looking up from his book. "Really, you drove?" I nodded absentmindedly while trying to find where we were on the map. "So what do you think?" I looked up in confusion. "What do you mean?"
"The van, how did she drive?"
"You're driving her right now, you idiot."
"Well yeah but what did you think of her."
"Fine, I guess. I was a bit preoccupied with you nearly dying. This is why the two of us don't do field work, Caleb."
"Nearly died? I'm fine, I just got stabbed and hit in the head."
"Just got stabbed? Just got stabbed?"
"So you're complaining about me? What about the time you took a bullet and got nerve damage?"
"I-"
"Or when you nearly got your right hand amputated?"
"Caleb-"
"Oh or how about the time someone was holding a gun to your head?"
"Seriously-"
"So don't get mad at me for getting injured one time when I've been worried sick about you so many times."
"You were worried sick?"
"Well yeah, obviously, you're like my brother."
Ouch. I knew he felt like that but still, being reminded of it isn't fun. "I love you, Gaten." I knew he meant it platonically but hearing him say it still made me happy. "I love you, too." I whispered back.We made it back home before nightfall.
"Okay I officially have nothing too cook unless you want some heated ketchup." Noah said, walking out of the kitchen while we were playing cards. "Okay. Caleb, you stay at home. I know you still have a headache." Finn said, ignoring Caleb's protests. "Gaten, you drive. Sadie, grab your stuff." We all did as we were told, but not without Caleb complaining about feeling as useless as a walrus on a ballet team. "Caleb, could you just give me the keys?" I asked after ten minutes of this. "No, I'm driving. And stop yelling." He replied. "I'm not yelling, I'm damn near whispering. Now sit down, you took quite a hard hit so you're not driving us there." I instructed while pushing him towards the couch. Just as we were almost there he yanked my arm down and kicked my foot away, toppling me over. He sat over my chest while I tried to fight him off. "I'll get up when we leave, so I can race you to the van and then drive."
"No, Caleb, come on, man. I was not built for this!" I protested from under him. "How have you not gained any muscle after more than a year of fixing the house. See, you have." He reached over and grabbed my arm. "You're pulling your punches, Matarazzo." A voice spoke up from the doorway. "He's got a damaged eye bone, Sadie. I'm not giving him another black eye." I said and she rolled her eyes, quickly pulling Caleb off of me. "You. Sit. Keys. Here." Caleb handed over the keys and sat down defeated. "Why don't you do some laundry while we're gone." Finn said, also walking in. He had a glint in his eyes, we all knew Caleb hated doing the laundry.Eventually we ended up in the van with four people. Caleb had given up and I was trying to drive while also fighting off Finn for the control over the radio. "So where are we going?" I asked Sadie while smacking Finn's hand. "Grenville. There's a grocery store right outside it. Noah made a list of what we need to get but you're free to grab anything else." I nodded at her in the rear-view mirror. "So, what do we need, Schnapp?" Finn asked. Noah cleared his throat before listing off everything from Kleenex to pasta.
The ring off the bell almost scared me as I stepped into the store. I had two bags at my side and a gun in my hand under my coat. I waited in one of the first aisles until Noah and Finn were inside. We all pulled out our guns at the same time, scaring quite a few people. The screaming started almost immediately and people were fleeing towards the corner farthest away from us. The cashier was reaching towards the phone but Sadie had already created a "dead zone" where she was able to stop every outgoing signal from the store. Finn kept the cashier under shot while Noah quickly grabbed all of the money. I was calmly going through Noah's list while keeping my gun in my hand. Everything went as smoothly as an armed robbery could go and we were out of there in no time.
