Jack

It was a crazy idea. But a lot of Jack's crazy ideas tended to work. He thought that if he could somehow take a look at his memories like he had once before, Jack thought he could be able to finally figure out the strange dreams and flashbacks he'd been having. And Tooth, being Keeper of Teeth, could help him do just that. They had teleported to her Tooth Castle via snow globe, and she was about to open his little golden drawer full of baby teeth when she stopped. "Are you sure you want to do this, Jack? It may be painful for you to remember what you've lost," she warned.

"I need to know ," he answered, looking her in the eye. And the moment the container of teeth came in contact with his hand, Jack was transported into a long lost memory.

He was looking down on himself, before he had become Jack Frost. He wore a ragged brown cloak, and his hair was brown, but he could recognize himself all the same. Past Jack was pushing his way through the undergrowth of a forest when he stopped. Kneeling in a clearing nearby was a little girl. She wore her platinum blonde hair in a braid down her back and had elegant little white gloves on, even though it was the middle of spring. The thing that surprised both Present and Future Jack was the jagged ring of ice, snow, and frost surrounding the girl, who had her head in her hands and was sobbing. Past Jack moved slowly towards her. "Are you all right?" he asked her. The child lifted her head. Present Jack could tell that she would've been pale if not for her flushed red cheeks, and her watery eyes were a light blue, quivering with fear. As soon as he saw the girl's face, it all came back to him. "Elsa," he whispered to himself, "her name was Elsa."

Present Jack watched as Past Jack did his best to cheer little Elsa up.

"Oh come on, you've gotta tell me your name!" I betcha I can guess." At this, Elsa gave him a strange look. But Past Jack didn't seem to notice. He pretended to be thinking really hard. "Is it...Bob?"

Elsa looked confused. Past Jack continued. "Maybe...Gertrude?" Finally Elsa let out a little giggle. I've got it!" Past Jack said, trying not to laugh, "Is it...Mr. Snuffalupugus?" Suddenly Elsa burst out laughing and said quietly,

"you're funny. My name's Elsa. What's yours?"

"That's a beautiful name!" Past Jack said, "I'm Jack. Now, why were you crying?"

Present Jack watched as Elsa explained how she had been born with strange icy powers, able to conjure up snow and frost. She also told him how she had run away from the palace and gotten lost in these woods. She seemed to trust this silly stranger, for no one had made her laugh in quite a while.

When she'd finished, Elsa looked up at Past Jack cautiously. "Well?" she asked, "Aren't you going to run away?" Then, to her surprise, Past Jack answered with,

"I'm not going anywhere. I'll help you get back to the castle Your Highness, just follow me." And with that he led her south towards the castle wall. Present Jack now knew what would happen next. He would take Elsa to the castle, and visit her every day until one day she wouldn't let him in. One day when she was too scared to come out of her bedroom, too scared to let anyone in.

The same day, he would become Jack Frost and not see her until she was a young woman, driven to running away from the castle again, and finally letting go. But she didn't recognize him, let alone see him. And then I never saw her again, thought Present Jack. Afterwards, his memory faded and he was once again holding his drawer full of teeth, standing next to Tooth. "I need to get her back." Jack murmured.

"What? Get who back?" asked Tooth, confused.

But Jack wasn't paying attention. He couldn't stop thinking about the girl who seemed to be the only one like him, and he had lost her. He couldn't accept that. He had to find a way to find her again, somehow. Tooth seemed to know exactly what he was thinking.

"I warned you that it would be painful. But you must understand that you cannot bring her back. It's impossible. Well, perhaps if...no!"

"What is it? Tell me!" Jack desperately wanted to know.

"It's much too dangerous, and I don't even know if it would work. North would never..."

Jack interrupted. "He would never what? Please Tooth! I need to know!"

Tooth finally relented, "the snow globe."
