“You’re awake.” The lead man intoned. “Good.”
He leaned towards Siobhan and she flinched away from his outstretched hand. That’s when she realised that she was tied to the table.
She thrashed around desperately, but to no avail. She was stuck.
One of the women, the redhead with sparkling white teeth, held her head down.
Siobhan found her thoughts drifting to Elaine.
Where was she? Was she alright? Did she know that her mother was missing? Maybe she needed her help! Was someone looking after her? Did she know what was happening? Had Melusine got her too?
Melusine! That traitor! She sold her out. And probably Onyx and Kimberly too! If she ever got out of here…
Her thought was cut off when she felt the icy scalpel pierce her skin. They were cutting into her stomach, towards her very core, the source of her power. She was suddenly overcome by panic. She thrashed around, arms flailing uselessly by her side, until she felt the scalpel pushed in deeper.
A sudden light appeared. It was coming from inside Siobhan. It was blinding, seeming to change colour every few seconds. Purple, pink, white, blue, green. Then a colour Siobhan had no name for.
Her captors gasped, stunned.
The man in charge reached towards the light. Siobhan began to hyperventilate. They all heard her and turned to look at her. Her heartbeat was racing, and a machine by her bed registered the acceleration. It climbed higher and higher, all the while, the captors stared at her, until it flat lined. As her heart stopped, Siobhan passed out.
Once again, she woke up in a van. It was light this time, and she could clearly see Onyx and Kimberly leaning over her anxiously.
“What happened?” she mumbled. Their faces cleared in relief.
“I don’t know.” Kimberly replied. Siobhan glanced at her stomach and screamed.
“No! No, no, no, no, no!” she moaned, staring at the red scar running through the middle of her stomach. “They did it! It was real!”
“What?” Onyx and Kimberly said at the same time.
“My heart.” She murmured to herself. “I’m alive! But how? I must still have my power…”
“What are you talking about?” Kimberly practically yelled.
“They operated on her.” Onyx said quietly. “Tried to take her power. But they needed her alive, they couldn’t kill her. But why else would they need her… why do they need you?” She turned to Siobhan.
“How am I supposed to know?” she replied, not even bothering to ask how she knew that.
She just shrugged.
“Well, it doesn’t matter. We need to get out. Now.” Siobhan had decided. Enough was enough. “Kimberly, check the door. Onyx, check the walls. Elaine… Elaine.”
Her lip wobbled.
“I miss my baby.” She whispered, tears streaking down her cheek.
“Mamma.” Came a voice. “Mamma!”
“Elaine?” she whispered. “Elaine!” her voice grew louder. “Where are you?” she was sobbing.
“She’s not here, Iquabeth.” Kimberly murmured.
“Can’t you h-hear her?”
“No.” she put her arm around Siobhan’s shoulders. “She’s not here… Siobhan.”
Kimberly sounded almost... Compassionate.
“She has to be!” Siobhan screeched.
“She’s not. I’m sorry.”
“Mamma…” The voice came again.
“That’s it. Guys, I told you what to do.”
“Door is locked.” Kimberly reported.
“Walls are weak.” Onyx said.
“Okay.” Siobhan replied. “On three, shove your weight to the left. One… Two… Three!” They threw their weight against the wall. It cracked slightly. “One… Two… Three!” There crack got bigger. “ONE… TWO…THREE!” The wall broke in two.
“Yes!” Kimberly punched the air.
“Let’s go.”
