“I do.” David proclaimed. He leaned slowly in to touch his proud, wilful lips to Nyari’s. Cheers erupted all around them, breaking the silence that had been present as we all waited for those two, life-changing words.
Siobhan sat back and watched, no sound escaping her tight, red lips. Elaine tugged on her coffee-coloured arm and Siobhan pulled her onto her lap, lost in thought.
With David gone, she was all alone.
Alone with her three year old daughter.
Ever since Elaine had been born, she’d had her brother to help, but news of David’s engagement had come, and Siobhan had no one else to help her. Her life had changed a long time ago, and all of her friends from that life were gone, no longer reliable. Only David- annoying, pompous, irritating David- had stayed.
David was very… proud. He knew he was handsome, and he used it to his advantage. His emerald eyes could only just be seen through the pitch black curtain of his stylishly messy hair. His sharp, defined cheek bones made his deep eyes stand out even more, giving him a mysterious appearance. Girls came and went, but Siobhan and David never fought.
After the wedding, David and Nyari were moving to Paris. Now they’d never get the chance to fight.
Siobhan was swayed from her thoughts by Elaine, as she whimpered and used her mother’s luxurious black hair as a support to help her stand. Siobhan found herself staring into deep violet eyes. Elaine had inherited them from her mother, who had inherited them from her mother, and her mother’s mother. Every woman born into her family had those same eyes, but it wasn't just their family.
“Don’t worry, Sweet, it will be over in just a sec.” Siobhan reassured her. Elaine smiled, lulled into a trance by her mother’s rich caramel voice. Siobhan stroked her bright blonde hair; her long blood-red nails were a shocking contrast to the light shades and natural highlights.
The vicar began speaking, so Siobhan immersed herself in watching Elaine play with the fancy jewellery and golden chains dripping from her neck and wrists. It was all real, of course. She used to have a lot of money, which she had inherited from her mother when she had died. Suddenly they were brought out of their trance by a shadow hovering over them.
“I’ll miss you, See.” David murmured.
“I’ll miss you, too.” She muttered, without looking up.
“Hey, Elaine, how ‘bout a goodbye kiss for Uncle David?” he cooed, leaning down to kiss Elaine’s forehead. Siobhan rearranged her daughter’s hair, trying to protect her beloved child from the second man trying to abandon her.
“Should I be jealous?” Nyari’s teasing voice stood out from the babbling crowd. Siobhan and Elaine melted into the crowd as David turned to greet her. Elaine’s lower lip wobbled.
“Does Uncle Dave have to go?” she sobbed quietly.
“I’m afraid so.” She replied, taking Elaine in her arms. “He has his own life to live.” And we have ours, she added in her head.
Elaine settled back, her blonde head resting on the arm of her mother’s latest slinky top. Siobhan would never wear anything that wasn’t at the height of fashion. This had been drummed into her from a very early age; it was just the right thing to do. Elaine’s favourites were her mother’s sparkly jeans.
“Can’t we go, too?” she sniffled, nuzzling into her mother’s neck.
“They need some space.” Siobhan answered. She wiped away a stray tear, that had somehow managed to begin rolling down her cheek, and followed the rest of the crowd as they were herded towards the cake.
Camera’s flashed as the couple cut the cake. They fed a bite to each other as Siobhan wandered away.
“Not staying for the customary first dance?” A musical voice sounded behind her ear. She opened her mouth to reply, turning to face the stranger. Her voice faltered as she met the gaze of penetrating violet eyes.
Witch eyes.
