Siobhan let out a loud battle cry and her miniature army surged towards Saleena.

Over the next few minutes- or seconds, it was impossible to tell- Siobhan lost track of what was going on. Spells were blasted back and forth, knocking people off of their feet, into shelves, cabinets and glass display cases. Shattered glass rained down, coating the floor in shards that could slice your feet into shreds.

All Siobhan remembered was a red light slicing through the middle of the room and hitting her in the chest. She flew backwards into a glass cabinet, which shattered under the pressure. She felt blood soak through her hair. With difficulty, she stood up. She cupped her hands, muttering under her breath, until a sphere of golden light appeared between her palms.

Siobhan grunted with effort as she pushed it from between her hands, aiming for Saleena.

Everything after that was a blur.

The battle was shorter than it had felt. It only took five minutes for three members of Siobhan's army to fall, and for Saleena to be captured.

David and Onyx had her cornered. Onyx held a hand to Saleena's forehead and chanted under her breath for a moment. Saleena disappeared.

David rushed over to the three heaps on the floor. Their injuries were minor.

David had acquired a few cuts and bruises, but nothing to serious. Onyx had not been hurt at all, in fact, she was the only one who had not been hit by one of Saleena's powerful spells. Kimberly was one of the people on the floor, knocked out by a spell that hit her in the head. She came round when Onyx tipped a glass of water over her head. Melusine was on the floor next to Kimberly, but she was still conscious. She was surrounded by a puddle of blood, and she was thrashing around in pain. Siobhan was also on the floor, but she had just banged her head and came round pretty quickly.

Onyx and Siobhan worked over Melusine for a few moments, clearing blood and patching up her injuries. When they were done, she was still shaking, but had stopped thrashing around.

Elaine had crawled over to her mum at the first available opportunity after David had opened the glass case. They hugged for a long time, before David had interrupted.

"I think we need to get Melusine home." He suggested. "And I should be getting back to Nyari."

"So soon?" Siobhan looked down at her feet. "I thought maybe you could stay a while."

David hoisted Melusine up off the floor and held her in his arms.

"She's pregnant, remember? I don't feel comfortable leaving her alone this long." He began to walk slowly towards the exit.

"Well, I guess we should get home, too." Siobhan sighed, looking down at Elaine, who was holding on to her ankle for dear life. Elaine nodded gratefully. "We have a lot of work to do."

Four months later, Siobhan recieved a call. David's voice, shrill and demanding, came down the line.

"Siobhan! Come quickly! Nyari- the baby- I can't handle this, See, I can't! It's time! Help me I don't know what I can do! The baby- it's tearing her apart! She can't survive this, surely! Her- her stomach! Noo," he moaned. "This wasn't supposed to happen! The baby, it's, it's not human!"

The line went dead. Siobhan slowly placed the phone onto the surface top, and stood for a moment.

Was it time? Time to tell David the terrible secret that had been plaguing her mind for months- ever since Nyari had come to visit her, and told her what David must soon find out about the baby?

"I couldn't tell him, Siobhan, I just couldn't. That spell... it was a mistake! Why must I pay for it like this? My baby... my poor baby. Destined to become a monster... but," Nyari's voice faltered.

"Go on." Siobhan had prompted.

"He must never know... the baby... will be a demon. A demon of the darkest kind. One that lives only for blood, only for the precious life source that circles round our bodies as I speak... he must never know I caused this. Never know about my deal with Saleena. Siobhan, you must promise me you will not tell him until I am out of this world."

Siobhan had agreed.

The time was near.

She grabbed Elaine and rushed outside without putting on a coat. The cold December wind tugged at her hair as she flagged down a taxi and climbed into the back seat. She prepared herself for the worst. It was time to kill the newborn child, before it could harm any one else.
