They ran through the field beside the road where the van had crashed.
They had been running for at least twenty minutes, and Onyx was beginning to droop. She had slowed down drastically, and was running with her eyes closed.
“That way…” Siobhan gasped, pulling Onyx by the hand. “West… no, East.”
“Look!” Kimberly yelled. “They aren’t following!”
“WHAT?” Siobhan stopped suddenly, causing Onyx to run into her back. “They… aren’t… following?”
“Family!” Onyx announced, out of breath. “Up ahead!”
She was right. A family of four was having a picnic, just up ahead. The mother had a phone pressed to her ear. The three girls ran towards the family, desperate for help. Without even saying anything, Kimberly ripped the phone from the lady’s hand. She opened it, but lowered it to her side as the realisation hit.
“I have no one to call,” she whispered as the family scattered.
“Give it to me.” Siobhan said. She handed over the phone as if she was sleepwalking. She dialled a number and put the phone to her ear. “Mother Imperal!”
“Yes?”
“I need your help! Melusine sold me out. They tried to take my power! I need you to come pick me up.”
“Oh, I don’t think you’d like that.” Mother Imperal laughed quietly. “It wasn’t Mel. I sold you out, See.”
“Why?” she gasped.
“You abandoned us. You abandoned me. You hurt me.” She muttered. “I’ll come and get you.” The phone went dead.
“Oh no.” Siobhan panicked. “What have I done? She’s coming! We’ve got to get out of here!”
“Wait, wait, wait, slow down. Who’s coming?” Kimberly asked, annoyed.
“My Mum!” Siobhan gasped and covered her mouth with her hand. “No! I mean, Mother Imperal! She’s coming.”
“What? Isn’t that a good thing?”
“She’s evil.” Onyx had finally caught her breath.
“How do you know these things?”
“I… I’m… Her mother.” She looked away. “And… I’m not eight. I look eight, but… I’m fifty-two.” Kimberly and Siobhan gasped. “My… daughter” –she looked kind of queasy- “did this to me. But she’s no daughter of mine.”
“You’re my… never mind.” Siobhan looked away now. “We need to get going.”
They began to wander towards the road. Kimberly was, for once, speechless.
A car rolled to a stop when they were just a few meters from the curb.
“Get down!” Siobhan ordered. They ducked down below the grass line- which was ridiculously long- trying to be as quiet as possible.
The doors of the car- Lamborghini Murcielago, Siobhan thought, Nice! - opened, and three women got out. Siobhan recognised them immediately:
“Mother Imperal, Mother Jolie, Maiden Alyssa.” She listed in a whisper. “What are they doing here?” Kimberly and Onyx shushed her.
The Mothers and the maiden spread out around the field, searching for the girls, Maiden Alyssa coming within ten feet of their hiding spot.
“The car!” breathed Onyx.
