“This is your duty, now Saleena!” Siobhan practically screeched towards Saleena’s retreating figure. “Or did you want me to become crone?”
Saleena froze. She whirled back round to face Siobhan, her face set in a sneer.
“You?” She sneered scornfully. “What makes you think you would get it? You’re not even a proper witch.”
“Maybe not, but I’m ten times as powerful as you,” Siobhan was conscious of the crowd of humans surrounding them. “And, you know it!” she hissed.
“You can have the job.” Saleena said dismissively, turning away again.
“I don’t want the job.” She sighed to herself. “But I guess it’s up to me.”
“Elaine, can you pass me the rose petals?” Siobhan asked, stirring the cauldron in front of her. Elaine handed the jar to her mother drowsily.
“Okay,” she sighed, tossing a few petals into the pot. “That should do it.”
“Are you sure?” Melusine asked anxiously from the other side of the potion pot.
“Yep.”
“Well, what are we waiting for?” she asked. “Let’s try it out!”
“Whoa! Hold on. We can’t redo this if it goes wrong. There’s no ‘trying it out’! It’s a one-shot thing.” See scolded.
“Okay, okay. We’ll split it into two, then, when you’ve looked around, you can come back, grab a few spells, and go back into the dreams. Here,” she flapped her arms towards the sofa. “Lie down.”
“Okay, just… be careful.” She closed her eyes, ready to feel the sting of the potion.
“Don’t worry… relax.” Siobhan felt a sting in each eye. She drifted off into a deep, deep sleep.
She opened her eyes to a new reality. She was in a dark hallway, with thousands of doors on each side. Each door had a name engraved near the top. Jason Costillana. Mindy Colling. Lottie Crook.
She slowly walked forwards, staring with awe at her surroundings. She had never imagined the corridor of dreams, to be so… dreary and depressing and just plain, dark.
Suddenly, a door labelled ‘Alexandra Redthorn’ opened and three people walked out. They were identical; all girls with a long red plait trailing down their backs, alabaster skin and cold, grey stone eyes. Simultaneously, they turned their faces towards Siobhan. After a moment they turned back and began to walk forwards, crossing the hall to a room labelled ‘Jonathon Little’. They walked through the door, gently closing it behind them.
That was weird, Siobhan thought.
She decided to take a look at Alexandra’s dream. The open door revealed a river of blood running through a blackened landscape. A blonde girl ran past, screaming in a voice so high it didn’t sound natural. Suddenly, a tall girl with a featureless face appeared, taking hold of the girls shoulder. The girl’s screaming reached a new intensity.
Siobhan closed the door quickly, but not before she saw the featureless girl rip the blonde girl’s arm right off of her shoulder.
