Suddenly I hear a screeching sound, and I shoot up. My hands fly to my ears and I gasp. It sounds like nails on a chalkboard, reverberating off of every building, every street, and every wall of the city. I hear shouts start to spring up from many buildings around me. I look up at the sky and see a dark shape moving quickly past the moon. I squint at it, trying to get a better look at it. Then it's gone. I spring to my feet and scramble down the side of the building, flinging myself in through the window. I slam it shut behind me in hopes of muffling the noise, but it makes no difference. I run out of my room and look down the hallway, where Adam is standing, covering his own ears.
"What the h*ll is that sound?" he shouts. I shake my head, gritting my teeth. "Come on, let's find out!" I yell back, straining my voice. We quickly bolt down the stairs and open the door. There's shouts coming from all over the city; Scientists, Hybrids, and Shop Owners alike fill the city streets. We dash out into the road and our heads fly back and forth, searching for our friends. I close my eyes and focus with all my strength on my powers. The world around me slows. I open my eyes and quickly, my vision moves forward, flashing through the crowd, until standing by the Enderdragon Hybrid House, I spot a small group. Ty, Jason, Mitch, Jerome, Ian, Quentin, Seto, and Sophie are standing there, their faces full of fear and confusion. Suddenly, everything speeds back up to normal speed and my vision zooms back out.
"This way!" I shout, and I begin sprinting towards the Enderdragon house at top speed. I sense Adam following right at my heels. I skid to a stop next to Jason and we all look at each other. We all have out hands to our ears, except Jason, who has his helmet to muffle the sound. I look up to the sky and spot something that makes my heart almost stop. My eyes widen, and I see everyone spot it almost instantaneously. A large, fiery object is hurtling across the sky at too speed, leaving a trail of smoke in its wake. It's seems to be positioned to go a bit away from us, but I can't tell if it's dangerous or not. The sound is the whistling of the pressure being built up against the object as it hurtles towards the ground. It begins to get larger and larger, and closer and closer to the ground, until finally it goes behind the Walls.
Then, there's the crash. A deafening explosion rings out across the city, and a force like a ginormous gust of wind gusts at us. It's similar to the force I felt in that one dream I had a day ago as I hurtled towards the City. There's a huge red flash in the sky, and smoke begins to rise up from behind the Walls. The streets are completely silent, and the people clustered in the streets stand perfectly still, watching the plume of smoke as it drifts up into the stars. After several moments, the silence is broken.
"Alright, everyone line up. Scientists, round up anyone remaining inside, then report to me immediately!" A shout rises up from the steps of the Institute. It's the Scientist from the experiment earlier today, the one with the thick-framed glasses. I follow the orders, as does everyone else. I stand in between Ty and an older chicken hybrid, and when I look, I spot Adam standing with Alesa and Seto a short distance away. 'I'll have to ask him about the sorcerer theory later.' I think to myself. The Scientists then come out of the Institute, arms filled with bright neon green potions. Oh dear god. Not this again. I focus my vision on Adam.
It's the potions. I think, directing it to him. He nods, not looking at me as not to draw attention to us.
I know, don't worry, it won't work. Hopefully... I bite the inside of my lip. Yeah, hopefully.
The Scientists evenly split the bottles between each other and then they spread out, beginning to pass them to people. The phrase "Do not drink until told to do so!" echoes around the square as the potions are passed out. Then, the Scientist with the thick glasses is standing I front of me, in his hand a single potion. He passes it to me and says the phrase. I sigh as he turns to walk away. "Who are you? I've never seen you here before." He stops and looks back to me, a sad smile on his face.
"I'm Tyler, the new Head Scientist." He says.
Then he turns away, and walks back to the front stairs of the Institute, where the other Scientists are waiting. As he turns to look at the hybrids and shop owners circled around him, I flash a glance at the others. Many are swirling the potions around, or tapping on the glass, looking confused. I look at Adam and see him doing the same. He must be pretending as not to draw attention to himself. I look down at my own and do as everyone else. The liquid emits a florescent green glow, and fizzes slightly at movement. The clearing is doused in dim neon light due to the bottles.
"Alright, everyone, uncap your potion and drink the entire bottle, please." 'Tyler' says. I pop out the small cork and let it fall to the ground with a soft thud. I'm only half confident, as I'm not sure if it will be ineffective as it was the first time. I swirl it once and then bring the opening to my lips, lifting it up so the potion empties into my mouth. I feel a but hazy, but after a few moments, the feeling vanishes. I can still remember everything that has happened in the past couple hours, as clearly as if they happened a second ago. A confused murmur rises up around the clearing as people finish their potions, and they begin to disperse. I walk over to Adam and grab his arm. "Come on, let's go back inside." I say and begin dragging him away. Then I look at him and see a strange expression plastered on his face. Then he speaks.
"Why are we out here in the first place?"
