Everyone had shown courage. Though we knew that Aro's army was moving against us. Soon we would face the dark gifts of Jane. And worse, the paralyzing vapor of her brother Alec who could rob you of sight, sound, and touch.

Nik and I stood in a little clearing, away from all of the Cold ones and my sister. I loved Bella dearly, but with the tense atmosphere of the Volturi quickly approaching. It was nice to get away.

"I don't think I can thank you enough, for what you and your family are doing for me and mine." I break the silence.

Nik looked over at with his ocean blue eyes. I watched a smile take over his soft pink lips.

"You don't need to thank me, love. As I've said before, Family above all, always and forever."

I smiled and pushed a piece of hair behind my ear. The chilly fall air surrounded us, signaling that winter was vastly approaching. It wouldn't be long before we faced off against the Volturi.

I looked over at Nik and watched as he sketched something that I could not see.

"You never told me your story."

He looked over at me, confusion in his eyes.

"What?"

I smiled softly.

"How you became a vampire. You never told me your story. I've heard Caroline, Elena, Stefan and Damon, Katherine, but not yours or your family's."

Nik placed his sketch pad down, turning to face me. I could see darkness wash over his normally bright blue eyes, and I braced my face for what I was about to hear.

"It was 1001 A.D, my younger brother Henrik had just died and my parents wanted a way to protect their remaining children. So my mother created a spell that would make us faster than the wolves, stronger. One night at dinner, she laced our wine with blood, and our father drove his sword through our chests.

"We woke up the next morning, craving the very thing that changed us. We weren't allowed into the sunlight, or into anybody's home without an invitation. The flowers at the base of the White Oak were used to burn us and prevent compulsion. But the one thing my parents hadn't planned on was the blood lust.

"It drove us, made us unpredictable. The night that I made my first kill, my father discovered my mothers greatest treason, I was not Mikael's son. My mother had an affair many years before, and when Mikael found out, he went on a murderous rampage, killing everyone in our village including my real father.

"I was furious when my mother decided to place a curse on me, making my werewolf side dormant, that I killed her. I killed my own mother. I convinced Rebekah that our father had done it, and after Kol and Finn fled, she and Elijah stayed behind to help me 'bury' her.

"My siblings and I swore a vow to each other that day. 'Always and forever'."

As Nik finished his story, I felt tears well up in my blue eyes. What Nik had gone through in his past, all the pain he carried with him. I couldn't imagine.

I crawled over to the man, and rested my head on his shoulder.

"Nobody should have to go through that amount of pain."

Nik looked down at me with broken and teary eyes.

"You are so good. So angelic. You're light. How can you feel bad for such a monster?"

I rested my hand on his stubbly cheek and softly smile at him.

"In every angel, a demon hides. And in every demon and angel strides."

And with those words, I lean up and place my lips softly upon his.
