There was a huge thump as Matty fell onto the floor after I pushed him. I covered my face, I didn't know what else to do. I heard the toilet seat from the bathroom go up. That also squeaked.
"KATIE?" My dad called, I crawled over to the other side of the bed and leaned over, holding up my finger against my lips for him to be quiet.
"you pushed me!" he whispered.
"I didn't know I'd be strong enough to make you fall," I argued, whispering back.
"Shhh!" He shushed. I sighed and jumped into bed, throwing the blankets over my head. I could hear Matty crawling under the bed.
"KATIE IS THAT YOU?" My dad called again from the bathroom. I could hear the toilet flushing.
I remained silent, if I were to say yes he would know I was awake and keep bothering me. The sounds of the faucet came next as he washed his hands.
Please don't come in, please don't come in.
He knocked on the door, then opened it. I never understood what was the point in knocking if you were going to come in whether you received the okay to or not.
"Katie?" He asked.
I rubbed my eye, pretending to be woken up by him.
"Yeah dad?"
"What was that noise?" He asked, turning on the light switch next to the door and looking around to see if anything had fallen from their shelves.
"What noise?" I asked.
"I heard a bang..."
"Bang? Like, someone shooting or something?" I asked, I was always a professional at the tired dried-out voice. My mom was the only one who ever got the fact that I was asleep from it...my dad just never could take a hint.
"No, like something falling or being thrown."
I sighed and covered my face with my blankets, "I dunno."
"Alright, well, sorry to wake you. Maybe I'm hearing things. Goodnight." He turned the switch back down and stepped out.
"Night." I mumbled.
Matty crawled from under the bed right away, "stay there." I whispered. Why would he come out so soon what if my dad had turned back around and came in?!
I listened for him to make it to his bedroom and shut the door, what was taking him so long?
There were two clicking sounds, Matty gasped.
"What?" I whispered.
"Your dad, has a gun?!" He whispered in the sound of a shout.
Oh God.
My dad always had two shot guns for protection. He came in again, this time without knocking. He turned on the light, sure enough with the gun in his hand.
"Dad, what the hell?" I sat up and watched him.
He came and sat it down by my bedside table, "just in case you need to use it, you know how." He nodded, looking at me with the most serious look he'd ever given to me.
"Why?!"
"I told you, I heard something. I just want to make sure you're safe." He said, still looking around my bedroom as if to see a sign of what the noise was at any moment.
"Alright, dad, I'm sure it was nothing, just go back to bed." I shook my head, he made his way out of the room.
"I'm not crazy, Katie. Or old yet." He shut the door. I could hear Matty sighing from under the bed. I knew it was uncomfortable down there...from all the past moments I'd had spent searching for things that had rolled their way down there.
