Lilith's Perspective
"Oh come on pleaaase," Evelyn begged. "I'll even buy you an ice cream on the way back or something"
"I'm not going! It's so far and I have an assignment to catch up on Ev," I protested.Evelyn wanted me to come with her to her history partner's house on the weekend for crying out loud.
Everyone in the subject got partnered up, which Evelyn and I both thought was the most annoying system considering the necessity of meeting up at each other's houses. They even set it up so that it's boy and girl. Something about 'being comfortable with the opposite sex' or something else along those lines.
Our school's senior cohorts were so few that two grades formed into one full class for most subjects. Meaning I could at least laugh if Eve got partnered with a senior.
To my expectations, Evelyn got partnered with a 'really scary senior' apparently. I was staying at hers tonight which is why I was being forced into this other than the fact that she's a complete wuss. Dad had stocked up on his liquor last night, something I always took as an ideal 'study sleepover' at Evelyn's. We both didn't need to address that to know my other reason for coming.
"Please? You know I'm not good with guys, friends or not. I'd be able to actually work and I'd be more comfortable that way," she testified. Before I started to protest again she interrupted me.
"You can just like, work in the corner or something! And we only just got the assignment. You don't always have to finish them straight away! Please for me? I'll even help you with yours!" She gave me the biggest suck-up face ever. She started to shake slightly from anxiety. I hated that. It looked so unnatural with her vibrant energy.
"Evelyn?! What's wrong?"
"Just please come," she whimpered.
Sigh.
"Fine, but you owe me that bookmark I really wanted," I joked.
She exhaled in relief before thanking me and offering to buy me as many as I please.I mean, how bad could it be? I just hope the parent's wont think im intruding.
Evelyn's small Toyota Corolla car smelled of distant cigarettes mixed with her musk perfume. Whoever she bought it off clearly would have a lot of wrinkles by now from the strong stench of smoke we tried to wash/spray out on numerous occasions. Her car would stick out like a sore thumb here.
We'd been driving for what seemed much too long for our small town before we reached an avenue where all the wealthiest families of the state resided. We both gaped around the area. How people could live like this I couldn't imagine. While I had fenced nets, they had large wall's and majestic gates, complete with their own avenue of trees.
It had been years since I'd driven through this neighborhood. The last time I'd been here, I was a young child. The high walls and gates were now covered in an array of moss and vine.
"Hey, you alright b?" Evelyn asked from my right. "You seem a bit well...I don't know, out of it today. Did something happen?! Did someone do something?!" She burst, suddenly angry with her raising temper.
"No, not at all. I was just remembering the last time I'd been here"
"You've been here before?"
"Yeah. Years ago, maybe when I was eight or younger. Mum and I were visiting someone or something," I said.
Moments passed before Evelyn spoke again."She missed out you know," she stated.
"Who?"
"Your Mum," she said.
