18. Cold Hard Truth

Aaron's POV

"What did you see?" I said, trying my hardest to control my temper.

"You were cuddling on the bed with that black-haired chick! How cute. What was her name again? Starts with an A or something..."

"Aphmau. Her name's Aphmau."

"Yeah, her. She's in my English class. I recognised her."

"And how the hell did you even see it?"

Kai simply shrugged and pointed at the window. He then turned back to me and smiled smugly, putting his hands in his pocket and rocking back and forth.

"What do you want."

He scratched the underside of his chin and looked off into the distant, suggesting that he was thinking. But I knew it wasn't true. He probably already knew what he wanted.

"Well, I want an 'A' in Science and Katelyn."

I raised my eyebrow. Asking for a good grade? Yeah, it's expected. But asking for a girl? What the fuck?

"Katelyn? Are you serious? Do I look like her father to you?"

"She was at your house earlier, wasn't she? I just need you to convince her to not report me to the police and to come back to me. Tell her her deadline's over."

I stared at Kai in shock with my mouth slightly ajar. He grinned at my reaction .

"And if you don't do it, then I hope you don't mind being in prison then."

I was about to tell him it was our words against his and that he had no evidence but he somehow read my mind and held up his phone towards me. The picture on the phone showed Aph sleeping on my chest and my hand on her head. I growled silently. This boy was completely outrageous.

Kai smirked and waved at me before skipping away up the street.

I snapped myself back into reality. I've been playing that event over and over in my head for hours and only managed to get a few winks of sleep.

Sighing, I made my way towards the body-length mirror and took a look at myself.

I looked like a mess. Eye bags hung under my eyes and my stubble seemed to be growing longer. My black eyes were red and bloodshot and my lips were cracked and dry. At least my hair looked decent enough.

I decided to call in sick today. I wasn't lying, I am sick. I have a bad headache and it's slowly killing me. I walked back towards my bed, not caring if I looked like shit and fell on my bed, hoping to catch some sleep.

My phone was chiming non-stop when I woke up.

When the hell did I set an alarm?

Groaning, I turned towards my side and reached for my phone situated on my bedside table. Pulling it away from the charger, I realised that it was somebody calling.

Without checking the caller ID, I answered the phone.

"Who's this?"

"Aaron, it's me. Aph."

I shot up straight in my bed and pressed the phone closer to my ear.

"Hey babe. Why'd you call?"

"Why aren't you in school?"

"Bad headache."

"Are you okay?"

I nodded then realised she can't see it.

"Yep."

"Glad to hear. I have to go to class. See ya."

"Wait!"

There was a short pause before she answered again.

"I have to tell you something very important. Can you skip class?"

I swear I could hear her rolling her eyes on the other end.

"Since when does a teacher tells a student to skip class?"

I smiled when I heard a light giggle come from the other end.

"Please, just this once. You won't get detention."

"Detention is nothing to me, Aaron. But fine, give me a moment."

Shuffling and talking could be heard. After a few minutes, it went silent and I had to check if she was still there.

"I'm at the playground. What's up?"

"While you were sleeping last night, Kai was here."

She gasped.

"And he found out about us."

Aph gasped once more, louder this time.

"B-But how?"

"He...saw us cuddling..."

It hurt my heart when I heard Aph sob on the other end. I wanted to just reach my arm through the phone and hug her tightly.

"But he said he will keep his mouth shut if we do what he says."

"W-What does h-he want?"

I sighed and told her the rest of what Kai said last night.

"No fucking way! I will not betray Katelyn! Over my dead body will I ever do such a thing to her! You can't possibly be even considering it, can you?!" Aph shouted.

"But what about us?"

Silence. Footsteps. A sigh.

"I swear to Irene, Aaron. I will not betray Katelyn no matter the circumstance."

"I'm so sorry, Aph. It has to be done."
