Chapter 7:
Ferris was a small suburban town that lay only 39 miles from The Chocolate Factory. As Wonka steamed into Main Street at precisely 11:47 am, he let rip a loud bark from his mac truck horn, announcing their arrival.
Behind him, May's black Jaguar XT-2030 slowed to a halt and pulled over to park. Out stepped two young women, one's hair short and blond, the tips dipped in green. The other's dark, curly, and ombré-ed into a raspberry tone at the ends.
Sadessa pulled a cigar from her case and put it between her painted lips. "I don't know why you didn't tell me this last night. Why did we come all this way if you were so certain you didn't want to go?"
May took a break from worrying long enough to shoot Sadessa a look. "Oh yeah, like I was going to try to explain anything to you when you were all high as F last night. I hate it when you do drugs!"
Sadessa patted her pockets for her lighter. "Maybe if you tried it you'd loosen up." she smiled. "Always worrying!"
"Because this is serious!" May barked. "We're talking about life or death here!"
The smile on Sadessa's face fell. "Exactly. And do you think that if we opt out, Wonka and Gerald have any better chance of succeeding and living through their attack?"
"Well...no."
"May." Sadessa said as she lit her smoke. "They need us here. With or without anyone, they're going to do this. And I for one would like to do something that would really change things, instead of piddling around with the little farts of the Oompa hierarchy." Sadessa blew out a lungful of smoke. "And if we die? Well, then that's that. We've been risking out lives these past three years living with that prospect, so I can live with it now." Sadessa thought for a moment, and then a sad smile spread across her face. "And dying next to my Willy-boo? Doesn't get more romantic than that." She added.
May pulled off her glasses and pinched the bridge of her nose in frustration. She's right! God...May had been holding out the small hope that maybe once no one showed at the meet-up, and May told them her piece, that Gerald and Wonka would be discouraged and give up on their suicide mission.
"May."
May looked back up at her friend, her vision half blurry, half clear.
"If you don't want to do this." Sadessa said, her face serious. "If you just want to turn around right now...I'll come with you. If you decide that this isn't the right thing to do, I'll trust your judgment. I'm not going without you."
May took a deep breath and put her glasses back on. "Thank you, Dessa." May said. There was comfort in her words, but also weight. Now it was all on her to decide. To make the command decision. And it came down to one question.
Was she willing to die for this?
"Hey, guys!"
May turned around to see Gerald and Wonka making their way towards them, the Oompa Loompas now let out of the back of their 18 wheeler and busy milling around the vehicle.
"Have a good trip?" Sadessa asked.
"Yup." Gerald said nonchalantly, though the way Wonka was glaring at the back of Gerald's head indicated otherwise.
May's stomach felt like it was tying itself in knots. I made a promise to Lizzy. I can't go back on my word! But Gerald and Wonka need me, and I can't leave them in their hour of need. What am I going to do?! Is this mission the thing we're supposed to do? Am I ready to make the ultimate sacrifice? I know we've been living a life of danger, but this...this is going into something knowing that our chances of living are slim to none. Can I do that? Is it the right thing to do? I'd be leaving Lizzy to her fate...
