"It's me...your baby girl," I say as I try to hold back more tears. My mom approaches me with arms wide open and she hugs me as I weakly collapse in her arms. I don't understand how her and my dad are here. They we're suppose to be deceased from a house fire, years ago, but it seems like that's just not the truth.
"Don't let go mom..." I say in between sobs. "Just hold me..." I beg and she nods in agreement. "Of course I won't let go, sweetie," she says as she has the back of her hand on my head. I pull away from the hug and stare into her familiar brown eyes. She wipes my tears away and I try to get a grip on reality. "Oh, mom, this is Michelle and Jenna, my friends," I sniffle and introduce them to each other. They greet each other with a casual hi and a smile.
"And this is my boyfriend, Brad," I introduce them and she hugs Brad. "It's nice to see that Alyson has a boyfriend," she says. I introduce my friends to my dad, and then to Brad. "What's wrong, sweetie?" my mom asks, trying to cheer me up. "I'm just trying to fit all the pieces together..." I sniffle. "Well why don't we leave here, and go to dinner, and we'll explain everything, okay?" my mom rubs my back, we begin to walk as her and my dad notice the twins.
"Aw, who's adorable babies are those?" she asks. "Mine and Brad's..." I expect disappointment coming from my parents because as long as I can remember, I knew that teen pregnancy was something that was looked down upon by them. "Shut up, no way!" my mom says happily with a smile. I nod my head and smile back at her."Oh my god, congratulations, sweetie!" my mom exclaims and hugs me tight. She gives Brad a hug and I come face to face with my dad.
"Hi, daddy..." I say.
Without a word he pulls me towards his chest and hugs me. I'm instantly rewarded with the scent of the same cologne that he always wears and it takes me back to my childhood memories at home. I loved my childhood, it was anything a kid could ask for. Yeah, I'm an only child, and my parents are hardly home because my dad is a English college professor, and my mom is a veterinarian, but when they are home, we always cherish the moments we have.
I recall my parents telling me that when they found out they were having me, they got so excited, they took a vacation to Europe. I hug my dad back, who I haven't seen in so long, and I hear him tell me he loves me, and him and my mom are sorry for how they exited my life abruptly. He assures me that everything will be fine, and we can be a perfect family again. I nod as I look up at him and he kisses my forehead.
"Congratulations, Brad," dad shakes Brad's hand.
"Thank you, Mr. Porter," Brad smiles.
"Let me see my grand babies!" mom says as she picks up Chloe.
"Hi, baby girl, what's their names?" she asks us.
"Jonah and Chloe," Brad answers.
"Well, we're going to get going," Michelle tells me in a low audible voice that only I can hear. I nod and let her leave. I'm pretty sure she doesn't want to see another moment of Dr. Phil right now. We're off to dinner and I tell my parents that we'll meet them at Applebee's as I get into Brad's car and he straps Jonah and Chloe in their car seats. "Well that was something, right?" Brad asks and I nod. I don't know how to feel about my parents' sudden appearance in my life, and it's seemed long since I was told that they "died" in a house fire. I still want to know how they're here and not deceased as they were pronounced as.
Brad says nothing more, then backs out of the parking stall and goes to the Applebee's I promised my parents we'd meet them at. We arrive at the restaurant and the night has already set in, along with the cold-ish air. "Make sure you take in Chloe's blanket," I tell Brad as I take off my seat belt. He puts his hand on mine as it lays on the center console. "Do you think they'll like me?" Brad nervously asks. "They'll love you," I peck his lips. I get out of the car and I see my parents' car, and guess that they are already inside. I take Jonah out and Brad takes Chloe out. We walk inside and tell the hostess we're with my parents, who are flagging us down at the end of the aisle, alerting us of where they're sitting.
The waitress politely nods and smiles. We walk over to the table that's a round booth, and Brad and I sit down, putting Jonah and Chloe together. "Hey," I say as I look at my parents beside me and the waitress brings us our menu's. They both greet me back, but I want to get to the point that brought us here at Applebee's. "M-mom?" I stutter and she knows exactly what I want. She puts her hand on my dad's hand and he looks to her and she looks to him. She nods at him before they both look at me and explain to me why they're here.
"When you were young, and you were with your aunt Alicia, your father and I had been in that fire, we weren't hurt or anything, but we were taken to the hospital. After that, we were transported to the emergency room to have our injuries looked at and do further examination from there. After the doctors looked at us, they didn't think our injuries were any where near as complicated as a life or death situation. But, one of your aunts wanted you under her care, so she hired an attorney, and the attorney called your Aunt Alicia, and told them that we had passed. Little did we know, that same attorney was against us, and so was your Aunt Claire who wanted you to her self. The attorney we thought that was on our side, made us sign a legal document that handed you over to an adoption agency. We found out what the attorney had done, and we were furious, so we went to go get you and the attorney said that if we did, we were going to be arrested and separated from you for life. Your father and I found out on our own that we were able to contact you on your eighteenth birthday, without any government or legal problems involved, so we had to wait. All the birthdays that passed by saddened us, because we didn't know where you were, who you were with, and what you were doing. We just wanted our little girl back."
I heard the tremble in my moms voice as I knew that the story she had to explain hurt her all over again, leaving a new wound. "Well I'm here," I say with confidence. "And you're seventeen," mom smiles and so do I.
"So what are you doing now, Aly?" dad asks. He always liked to call me Aly. I don't know why but he always did.
"I'm going to school, I have a boyfriend, I have the twins, and I'm staying at home with my two gay foster dads, and foster brother and sister."
"Well we'd like to meet this foster family of yours," says mom.
After explaining to my foster dads the situation my biological parents were in, I finally introduced them to each other. "Harry, this is Erica, my mom."
"Hello," mom says, shaking Harry's hand then Louis'.
"And this is my dad, Michael," I say.
"Pleasure to meet you," Louis and Harry say while shaking my dad's hand.
Brad pulls me back a bit, withdrawing myself from everyone.
"Babe, you have to tell them about your uncle and what he did to you," Brad doesn't hesitate. "Not now. I just found out that they're not dead and they never have been, and they're happy that I'm back in their life, and I'm happy as well. Just not right now, Brad, now's not the time," I walk away from Brad, leaving him by the front door and I look back at him and see him with an unhappy face.
Maybe secrets shouldn't be told. Am I right or not?
