We walked in silence,
"Soooo...what's the plan Haru?"
"Honestly I didn't think much beyond seeing you."
That was the truth.
Mari appeared to think about that for a moment,
"The rumours, do they bother you?"
Her tone uncharacteristically insecure.
I remained silent and her lips thinned.
"Nobody likes a slut right?"
I could hear the anger but smelled her hurt,
Like withering roses.
I took her hand in mine and squeezed.
Mari's eyes finally meet mine,
"I wanna know" is all I say.
She takes a shakey breath.
"It was freshman year, Mark asked me out on a date."
"He's popular not to mention good looking, but that's not all, there's something wild about him, kinda like you"
Her eyes never left mine, searching.
"And?" I ask, feeling a little uncomfortable.
Her eyes, they ask too much.
"And...I gave it up on the first date. Word got around at school, Mark walked away and never looked back."
