I really couldn't care less about what Claudius announced throughout the tribute parade. After I stop staring at the district two tributes, I realise that a lot of the Capitol citizens seem to be throwing roses at their favourite tributes. When suddenly, I notice a rose flying towards my face. So I do the logical thing; I catch it.
Unfortunately, the Capitol citizens don't seem to realize that I didn't catch the rose out of my enthusiasm for them... I was only trying to avoid looking like a complete idiot on live television by getting knocked out by a rose. They all scream and cheer for me, leaving me utterly dumbfounded. Oh well... I think to myself. I force a big, fake, sugary sweet smile and wave at some people, instead of following my instincts, which are telling me to flip them off instead. The rest of the tribute parade happens rather fast, and I register zilch.
Finally, we get to go upstairs to our rooms, so we can rest for tomorrow. Which happens to be the first day of training. Yippee... I can only hope that the careers this year have trained less than they have the other years. Yes, I know, unlikely.
As Effie is explaining how the penthouse is the best and why district 12 tributes should appreciate it, I am busy thinking about the food. I am not sure that I will be able to stomach it all, considering I heard from Peeta earlier on the train that all Capitol food comes in ridiculously large serving sizes.
When we finally get up the elevator, into the suite, and to the table, it's starting to get late. My eyes widen when I see the feast that is laid out. I can't help but think about how this meal would be able to feed the entire seam for a few days, maybe even a week if it's rationed carefully. And here Peeta and I are, having it all for ourselves. The guilt crashes like a wave.
"Well, here is dinner! Now remember, careful manners.." Effie reminds us as she waves to the avox girl, gesturing for the chairs to be pulled out. I make sure to pull my own chair out with a specially loud screeching noise before the avox girl can get to it, just to upset Effie. She gives me a look. We all begin to eat.
Unfortunately, my suspicions were right. After the first plate, I was already stuffed to the brink of exploding. When Effie clapped her hands and piled some tender chicken onto her plate, filling it again, I could feel the still undigested food in my stomach threaten to come up. I barely managed to force it down with a grimace.
"Here now, Katniss, eat some more! You'll need your strength in the arena! Aren't you looking forward to it?" Effie exclaimed, piling even more salad onto my full plate.
At her words, I felt even more sick. "I'm full," I said bluntly, pushing the plate away.
At that, Effie gasped. "FULL? ABSOLUTELY NOT!" She shrieked.
Peeta smiled, and said, "Come on, Katniss, Desert is Heavenly! You can find some room left, can't you?"
I felt slightly disgusted by Peeta's willingness to eat the Capitol's food. He didn't seem the least bit guilty that the amount of food he alone was eating could have fed 3 entire families back in the district 12.
"No, I can't!" I answered him roughly before excusing myself and leaving the table.
