۵Ashton's POV
I sit here on the couch beside Zane, thinking.
I know werewolves are real. Nobody may believe me, but I know for a fact they are. I've seen one with my own eyes.
She saved my life.
Way before I knew Paris and Eudora, I was in a really bad place. I was believing what my dad was saying about me, I was believing what people said about me, and me and my dad were really close to being homeless.
It was a mess.
At some point, I guess everything got to be too much. My dad wasn't letting up on me about how I screwed up everything, and trying to pay the bills by my part time job at McDonald's, then trying to manage my grades. Eventually I just stopped.
I didn't care anymore.
I started believing and telling myself that I was a screw up and I deserved to die.
Zane doesn't know about this, he would have forced me to go to therapy or something.
One night, my dad said something to me and that was it. I was going to do it. I already had my note prepared and I knew where to go. I thought it was time.
I remember leaving my note on my nightstand before opening my window and running to the spot where I had been planning to do it. I had been waiting for the right time. When I finally cracked.
I stood on the edge of the cliff, staring at the jagged rocks below me and the unforgiving waves crashing into them.
This was my time, I thought.
I thought I would feel a bit nervous or uneasy about it, but that wasn't the case at all. I was so sure about it. I wasn't shaking nor did I have sweaty palms.
I was ready.
I lifted one foot off the ground.
Then another.
I felt so free as the wind rushed across my limp body as I fell.
Then, it's like time stopped.
Suddenly, I felt something penetrate my side. I remember thinking, is that teeth?
I opened my eyes to find a wolf biting me and my direction being changed from down and I am now going to the side.
We landed on a ledge and I immediately started kicking and pushing. If I couldn't go down by myself, than this wolf was going with me.
But, this wolf was super strong.
I ended up losing the battle and giving in to the wolf. I thought I was going to have to die by being eaten alive.
But instead, the wolf dragged me to a cave and released me from her mouth. She just sat and stared at me.
I remember waving my hand around in her face and saying, "Hey, wolf, aren't you gonna finish what you started?" But she didn't move an inch.
Where she had bitten me was burning like fire. I lifted up my shirt and took a look at the teeth marks and blood spilling out of them, ignoring the wolf's presence.
She walked to the bite marks and sniffed it then looked at me with apologetic eyes. I remember sighing in frustration and standing up.
"I'm going back." I mumbled before I started walking away. But I remember the wolf tackling me hard to the ground. I punched it as hard as I could in the chest causing it to whimper slightly.
"What do you want with me?!" I remember yelling angrily at the wolf.
Then, what happened at this sudden moment, changed my point of view on life forever.
The wolf bent her head down before she began shifting from a wolf to a human.
I remember being frozen in shock and fear at the sight.
Then I realized, I just punched a girl as hard as I could in the chest.
"Are you ok?" I asked as I walked over to her cautiously. She was holding her chest and gasping for air. I felt horrible.
She nodded after a few minutes then she looked up at me and I still remember the sound of her voice. "Why do you want to jump off that cliff?"
"First of all, what the heck are you?"
After I asked that question, I remember the exact look of panic and fear across her face.
"You saw me shift." She whispered and I nodded. "Please please please don't tell anyone."
"I won't, I swear, but who are you?" I asked. She sighed before relaxing a bit and straightening her shoulders.
"My name is Ruby, and I'm a werewolf."
After my stages of disbelief and shock, we sat there until day light, just talking. She listened to me in a different way than anyone has ever listened to me before. She was like the sister I've never had.
She told me that anytime I thought about doing something like that, to come to her there. So I did, many many times. Eventually the suicidal thoughts died down and I would just come there to hang out with her.
She claimed me as her brother and I claimed her as my sister.
But then one day, I would go to our spot, and she wouldn't be there.
I waited hours, she would never show up.
Eventually, I just gave up and quit going to our spot.
I haven't been there since, nor have I ever seen her again.
My thoughts are broken by Zane shaking me, he must've thought I was asleep.
I open my eyes and squint at him because of the light. "What?" I groan.
"Your girlfriend is in the elevator on her way up." He states and my senses come back to the present day.
The snake.
I feel absolutely horrible about forgetting Paris's birthday. It breaks my heart to think that nobody even wished her a happy birthday.
I quickly decide that I'm going to wait by the door and Zane is going to bring the snake out and to Paris. The thing looks terrifying and it's not even full grown.
Zane runs back to go get the snake and I open the door for them.
Paris smiles up at me. "Hi." She says before hugging me and I smile and hug her back.
"We got milkshakes." Sage states randomly. I can tell he's excited.
Paris looks at all of us before raising an eyebrow. "What's going on?" She asks. I can't contain my smile as I hear Zane's footsteps.
Zane walks in and I know it because Paris let's out a scream before running over to him.
"No. You guys didn't. . . Is this a prank??" She says as she lools back at all of us.
"That would just be plain cruel." I state.
Paris has the biggest smile on her face as she picks up her snake. She's continuously saying how much she loves her and how beautiful she is. Zane and I must've picked out a good one.
"This is like the best present anyone has ever gave me." She says still smiling. Then she jumps up and down a little excitedly while still holding the snake.
Seeing her this happy has made my day.
Next, we all sing her Happy Birthday then we eat a birthday cake we picked up earlier.
Even though I'm terrified of the snake, it's whatever makes Paris happy that matters.
