We Have To Work Together

Chapter Five: Mac

An hour later, we walk up to the house grunting and wheezing. "I am definitely getting my workout today," I say panting.

"What don't kill you makes you stronger," Jack states.

"Doesn't seem like it works for you."

"Shut up."

We manage to make it over the step leading to the front door.

"Do your legs feel like they're about to fall off your body?" Jack groans.

"A little bit."

I ring the doorbell and hear it ding dong inside.

A woman with curly blonde hair and big glasses opens the door. She looks nerdy but cool at the same time. Like maybe she's a journalist.

"Hey," Jack says. He's managed to pretty much catch his breath now. "We'd like to rent two rooms in this joint please."

"Oh! Of course of course!" the woman says ushering us in. She leads us down a hallway. "Rooms are ten dollars a night," she explains while shuffling to show us our rooms,"You're lucky. I only have two rooms available."

She opens a door, then another across the hall.

"Thank you so much for your hospitality," Jack says pressing his hands together, fingertips pointing towards the woman,"but if it's alright with you I think we're going to go ahead and crash."

"Fine by me," she says,"as long as you pay me in the morning." She shuffles back down the hallway and out of view.

That's when Jack looks down and notices the briefcase in my hand. "Man," he says," I never thought of you as the type of person who would take him work with him."

"Well, I can't just leave it in the car," I retort, venturing into one of the rooms.

"Well what are you going to do with it? Put it under your pillow?!"

"No, I'm going to put it in the safe."

"Oooh, and how is this almighty safe going to protect the good queen's gold?"

"Well I'm going to change the combination."

"Fine, but I'm not happy about it," Jack says,"Now as they say in these parts, time to hit the hay!"

I chuckle. "They do NOT say that here."

"Of course they do. They're country folk!"
