You muttered incoherent words about being an idiot under your breath as you walked down the hallway. Lost in self-deprecation, you almost didn't notice when you bumped into a familiar face-one you seriously did not wish to see right now.

"Yo," Nishiki greeted, observing your visage with a smirk. "Why do you look like you want to kill yourself?"

You glared daggers at him, choosing to ignore his comment. From the very beginning of your teaching journey, Nishiki Nishio had been the one person you just couldn't get along with. You never understood why Touka even associated with him, but he always managed to get on your last nerve, whether intentionally or not.

There wasn't a clear reason for your mutual disdain. Nishiki always greeted you with insults, and since Touka introduced you to her crew, he seemed to despise you. However, you were close with his girlfriend, Kimi Nishino, who was well aware of the rivalry between you two.

"Fine, just ignore me then," Nishiki shrugged, clearly unfazed, before walking away. You rolled your eyes and walked past him, desperate to find Touka and unload your embarrassment. She would likely scoff and remind you that she was always right.

"Yo, Haise!" You heard Nishiki call out. You froze, feet rooted in place, and slowly turned around. Nishiki was fist-bumping Haise, who glanced at you as if he wanted to say something. You bolted before he could form the words. Did he come out of his classroom to see you? You weren't sure.

"Haise?" Nishiki scratched his head, puzzled by Haise's expression. "Are you alright, man?" He turned to see what Haise was looking at, but you were already long gone.

"Y-Yeah, I'm fine," Haise reassured, smiling as if nothing had happened. "What's up?"

"We're still on for tomorrow night, right? You, me, Touka, and everyone?" Nishiki asked.

"Yeah, of course," Haise replied.

"Alright then, I should probably go. My class is coming back from assembly, and I need to get those slackers motivated. They don't take gym class seriously these days," Nishiki rolled his eyes. "Whatever, it's their loss," he shrugged before walking away.

Nishiki was a PE teacher. He didn't entirely hate his job, but he didn't love it either. It was growing on him, though. Most teachers associated with Touka or Yoshimura likely ended up working at this school after the Anteiku café burned down. This school was the next best thing.

Haise sighed deeply once Nishiki left. He felt a strange connection to Nishiki, though he couldn't understand how. Since accepting the job from the kind old man Yoshimura, everyone seemed to send him secret signals. Even some students, particularly Hinami.

Haise knew, somehow, that everyone here was connected to his past. He could tell by their looks, and it unsettled him. He was happy with his current life and didn't want it disrupted. He reflected, his hand touching his chin in silent thought.

The only person who didn't make him feel that way was you. You seemed unconnected to his former self. You were like a breath of fresh air.

You found Touka waiting outside the teachers' lounge. She held folders close to her chest, likely lesson plans. "What's wrong?" Touka asked, noticing your distraught expression. "You look like you've just blown something up."

Did you really look that bad? "You were right," you told her.

"That you just blew something up?" Touka joked. You playfully rolled your eyes. "I'm always right anyway."

"No, but I don't mind blowing H-" your dirty mind took over again, and Touka quickly covered your mouth with her hand, stopping you.

"Don't you dare finish that sentence," she warned. You nodded, and she removed her hand, wiping it on her skirt.

"Sorry," you apologised. "You were right about my dirty mind and uncontrollable mouth. I totally ruined things for myself today." You sighed.

Touka ran a hand through her hair. It looked darker and flatter than usual, a vivid purple more like her original colour before she dyed it. It still looked good, though. You wouldn't have the guts to be as spontaneous with your hair. [H/C] was good enough for you, even if it was basic.

"I'm not surprised," said Touka. "What did you actually do?"

You explained the situation, not missing any details. Touka clapped a hand over her mouth, bursting into laughter. You'd never seen her laugh like this, but it wasn't surprising she found entertainment in your misfortunes.

You stood there, waiting for her to calm down. When she finally did, she started laughing again. After five more minutes, you were ready to knee her in the stomach. Luckily, she stopped before you got the chance.

"It wasn't that funny," you glared icily. Touka ruffled your hair like you were a child or a pet.

"Oh [Y/N]-chan, I'm so glad I'm friends with you," she smiled genuinely.

"Me too," you replied. You didn't understand the sudden affection, but you didn't mind.

"Anyway, I've got to go, and you should too. It's almost lesson time," she said, glancing at her wristwatch. "You're free tomorrow night, aren't you?"

"I'm always free," you answered truthfully. When you weren't working or marking papers, you were eating, watching anime, or reading manga and Takatsuki Sen books.

"Good. We're going out with the colleagues tomorrow," she stated.

"What? We are?"

"Mhm. Wear something nice. I'll pick you up from your apartment; you have a day to find an outfit," she said before heading to her classroom.

You didn't agree to this, but it had been a while since you enjoyed a fun night out with friends. You decided to go and enjoy your youthful days while you still could. Besides, it would be a good distraction from today's embarrassment.
