Chapter One-
"And stay out!" Barry called throwing me out the door and onto the cold, dark streets.
"But..." I could barely get the words out before the door crashed closed behind me. Leaving me in the streets alone at 2 am.
I stood up and brushed myself off. Slowly I grabbed the bags Barry, my landlord, had thrown to the ground earlier in the evening.
"Two days off the rent schedule and you throw me out. Some way to treat your customers," I mumbled as I pulled my suitcase and purse along across the gritty sidewalk only lit by two dull, cracked street lamps.
I had no idea where to go at this hour, considering I'd just been kicked out of my house and I had no family close to me. The closest relatives I had lived in Sydney and I was just in the small Australian town outside of Queensland.
I decided to go to the studio where I worked thinking that I could get a few more beats written down before my boss showed up for the morning.
As I neared the bus stop a car came speeding by, splashing me with mud as we had just had a giant rain storm the night before.
"Ahhh!" I screamed and stood there for a few seconds sopping wet and shivering in the 50 degree weather.
"What else could go wrong!?" I yelled but thankfully nothing else happened to me until I reached the bus stop.
As the bus pulled in 20 minutes later I had finally got the last leaf out of my hair and my pants weren't dripping as bad.
I stood up, grabbed my suitcase and purse and hopped on the bus, showing the driver my daily rider pass so I didn't have to pay.
"Thank you Ms. Peters," the driver said reading my name off the pass.
I smiled and turned to choose my seat.
The bus was fairly empty besides two women in the front. They were both knitting and talking to each other about what Prince William and Princess Kate should name their next child.
I passed them and chose a seat near the back, plopping down and setting my suitcase and purse next to me. As we pulled out of the stop I grabbed my purple neon headphones and plugged them into my phone. Scrolling through the list of songs I decided on "the City" by Ed Sheeran.
The music blared into my ears as I hit play and I closed my eyes, hoping this bad day would dissapear as a dream would.
"If the city never sleeps then that makes two..." I mumbled along with the song as I fell into a restless slumber on the uncomfortable soggy bus cushions.
'Welcome to the glorious life of Layla Peters' I thought as I drifted off.
