We are

We are

I can't hold you properly.

Every time I try,

Something slips in me, in you.

We are so stuck in our roles,

Making the motions, like wooden dolls.

Stiff arms, but soft hearts.

Around you, I'm cautious, I'm afraid.

You would do anything to ease my fear.

Yet, it's not always so clear.

Sometimes, I'm the princess

You're trying to save.

Sometimes, I'm the dragon

You're trying to slay.

Either way, I run away.

From you, from love.

Again and again.

Sometimes, you're the gallant knight,

That I love.

Sometimes, you're far darker,

A demon I can't tame.

Who seeks to possess.

I can't understand these chains,

These shackles you bind me with.

Aren't all things meant to be free?

You don't want what I can give,

You seek more.

You want what I keep for myself.

So I run, you chase.

We destroy everything in our wake.

When I hold you,

You begin to constrict,

My air, my heart.

So I tear us apart.

But you know.

You understand,

The day you don't chase me,

Is the day you break my heart.
