Lost at Sea
Chapter 9
Unbelievable Tales
"What? Are you sure?" Obviously, Pietro was uncertain about his sister's idea.
Wanda appeared on the outside to be calm and composed, but that was the opposite of what she was on the inside. If you could look into her eyes, you'll be able to see it; the sorrow that was written deep within their orbs. What am I about to see? She mused to herself.
She simply shrugged her shoulders. "Yes, Pietro. The mind does not lie," She told him, "No matter how many lies you tell or how many secrets you keep hidden, your mind will spill them all like water." She twirled her red psionic matter around her fingertips. "Before, I never realized how much the medicines broke her." She picked up a pocket knife and flipped it around in her hands.
"What do you mean?" Pietro asked.
"Her mind is a war zone," Suddenly, she flung the knife across the field and proudly watched as it embedded into the trunk of a tree; bullseye. "The medications HYDRA injected into her created the war in her mind. HYDRA forced themselves into her mind after they captured her off the coast of Italy when she was three-years-old." Wanda stood up and started to pace. "They erased all memories of her life and forced her to forget everyone she knew and loved.
"Oh my gosh," Pietro leaned forward in his seat and held his head in his hands. He couldn't believe what he was hearing. He held his breath, willing himself not to cry.
Wanda continued to tell Alene's tragic past. "Luckily and thankfully, she was asleep the entire time. It looks like some people in HYDRA possess some mercy after all."
"Mercy isn't the right word," Pietro spoke up in a deep, growling voice. Wanda quirked an eyebrow up at her brother. She had never heard him speak like that before, and honestly, it scared her a little bit. "If they had mercy than they wouldn't have down what they did to her. If-" His voice cracked, "If only I had known what she was going through then I would've done everything or anything I could to stop it."
Wanda walked over to him and placed a hand on his shoulder. "We both would've, but we cannot change the past, Pietro. No matter how much we may want to, there is no way on this Earth we can go back. Even though it hurts us to know what happened, we cannot change it. Besides, think of all the good and fun times we had growing up together."
Pietro snickered at her wide smile and eyes swimming with mirth. "There's my brother," She mused. They laughed and embraced in a bone-crushing hug.
"When she wakes up, will she remember them? Her family?" He asked when they pulled apart.
Wanda shook her head, "No, she will not." She sighed. "Her memories have to be triggered. She can't just simply think of her family and POOF, she remembers. If that was the case then she would have remembered years ago. Even though they tried, HYDRA was unable to completely erase her memories. It's impossible. The brain does not work like that."
"How can they be triggered?"
"I'm not sure, but I'm guessing through a family member or something."
Pietro nodded his head, agreeing with the idea. "That seems reasonable. The only question is, who is her family? We have to find them as soon as possible if we want to help Alene."
"Well, luckily for us, they have made their whereabouts very well known." She wore a guilty look on her face. She was enjoying the suspense buildup to the reveal of Alene's family.
