Lost at Sea

Chapter 1

Meetings & Memories

"I remember it as if it were yesterday. I was walking home after a long day saving the world when I saw her. The most beautiful girl I've ever seen. She was gorgeous, like an angel straight from Heaven. When I walked by her, our eyes met. Even if it were for half a second, I had already seen everything in their green abyss. I knew that she would be the woman I'll fall in love with and marry. Right at that moment, my entire life changed. I wasn't living to save the world anymore; I wanted to live to create a future with this woman. I swore to always keep her safe from harm, until my very last breath."

"So far he's been doing a great job of it." The two turned towards the voice. In the doorway stood a beautiful, reddish-brown-haired woman wearing a flannel shirt and jeans watching Captain America laying on a twin-sized bed--which he was way too big for-- with his daughter lying safely in his arms.

Steve smiled at his wife and motioned for her to join them. Emily smiled and walked to the other side of the bed, joining her loving husband on the other side of their daughter.

"What story is daddy telling you tonight, Mari?" Emily asked her daughter.

"Daddy is telling me about how you met." Was her quiet response.

"Oh, is he now? What has he told you so far?"

"It was love at first sight." Emily laughed, thinking back to the night she and Steve met. She had just gotten back from her waitressing job at a local diner when Steve came around the corner. He was sporting a black eye, and his suit was covered in blood. She flattened herself against the wall to give him space in the tiny hallway. As he passed, their eyes met for a brief moment.

Emily watched the supersoldier take a few steps to his door before suddenly collapsing in a heap to the floor. She gasped and quickly raced to his aid. She somehow managed to carry him to her apartment where she treated his wounds.

After that, the rest is history.

Emily's thoughts were interrupted when Mariana asked her, "Mommy, can you sing for me?"

Emily smiled at her daughter. "Of course, dear."

'Beautiful dreamer, wake unto me,

Starlight and dewdrops are waiting for thee,

Sounds of the rude world heard in the day,

Lulled by the moonlight have all passed away!'

Steve pridefully watched his wife sing. He was happy. He had everything he could've ever wanted in life, right here in front of him.

'Beautiful dreamer, queen of my song,

List while I woo thee with soft melody, Gone are the cares of life's busy throng

Beautiful dreamer, awake unto me!

Beautiful dreamer, awake unto me!'

Emily and Steve looked at each other and smiled. They heard a little snore and looked down to see their daughter fast asleep. Both quietly got up from the bed, kissed the little girl's head, and made their way to their room, hand-in-hand.

"Thank you for singing her to sleep," Steve said. "If I continued my story, she never would have fallen asleep!"

Emily laughed. "Hey, even superheroes need help every once in a while."

"Got that right," Steve leaned in for a kiss, but met empty air. Emily dashed into their room before the supersoldier could react. She said something along the lines of, "Keep up, old man!", as she ran inside.

"Oh, so you want to play?" He unbuttoned his polo shirt as he joined his wife inside. She was standing at the foot of the king-sized bed, a playful yet seductive look on her face.

"Yeah, I want to play," Emily winked. She smirked as she beckoned him forward. "Shall we, my love?"

Steve matched her smirk with one of his own. "We shall," Before Emily could process what was happening, she was falling back onto the fluffy bed. Steve was quickly hovering above her, devouring her lips in a kiss. Their lips moved together in a dance they've done thousands of times before. Emily broke away to trail kisses down his neck.

A piercing ring interrupted the couple. Steve groaned as his wife moved to reach his phone. She handed it to him. He didn't bother looking at the caller id before answering with a biting, "Hello?"

Emily moved off the bed as her husband talked on the phone. She knew it was the agency. No one would call him while he is on vacation unless it is an emergency. She walked over to their suitcases and put on her pajamas. Steve was finishing the call when she walked back to him. She laid his pajamas out next to him.

"I understand, sir," He spoke. "Yes, sir. No mistakes." The line cut out. He let out a defeated sigh.

Emily wrapped her arms behind him as a silent promise of understanding. "What time do you have to be at the airport?"

"Five o'clock tomorrow morning," He responded. Emily sighed. "Hey, I know you're mad; I am too. I wanted this to be a special family trip, but work got in the way."

She squeezed his shoulder. "I'm not mad," Steve gave her an accusing look from over his shoulder. "Seriously, I am not mad. Disappointed for sure, but I understand. It's your job to save the world and I'm okay with that. It's not in your control what happens and when."

"Are you sure you'll be alright here by yourselves?" Steve asked. He grew worried at the thought of leaving his family to fend for themselves in a foreign country.

"Yes, Steve," Emily reassured him. "Besides, Mari and I are not entirely alone. This hotel is full of people here for the same reasons we are; for a holiday trip. Someone would be dumb to think of attacking us here."

"Never say never, love."

"We'll be fine. Besides, on the very slim chance that something happens, I know how to fight and fire a gun. You trained me, remember? I can protect Mari and myself if worst comes to worst."

"I know but-" Emily was quick to cut him off.

"Steve, you worry too much. We'll be just fine."

Steve sighed, finally relenting. "Okay, I trust you. But if anything, and I mean anything goes wrong-"

"Mari and I will get to safety."

He smiled softly. "Thank you," He kissed his wife before getting ready for bed. A while later, the couple was wrapped around each other, fast asleep.

forty-eight hours later

"Steve! You may want to see this!" Tony yelled over his shoulder as he and the other Avengers watched a breaking news report on the television.

Steve came over, "What is it?"

"News is breaking now of a plane crash in the Mediterranean Sea, off the coast of the Balearic Islands. The plane, an Embraer E-58 was en route from Venice, Italy to New York City. The French Coast Guard and rescue boats are on the scene now, but it is confirmed that no one survived. We will continue to bring you updates as we get them."

"Wasn't that the plane Emily and Mari were supposed to be on?" Bruce asked.

All eyes looked to Steve. Their faces displayed sympathy and sadness. Bruce didn't need to ask the question, everyone already knew the answer.

Steve choked on a silent sob before responding with a simple, "Yes."
