Lost at Sea

Chapter 10

Left Behind

Wanda, Alene, and Pietro were hiding behind a flipped coffee table. Bullets raced inches above their heads as they tried to assess their current situation.

"I don't think walking up and trying to manipulate them was the best idea!" Alene yelled over the noise.

"Yeah! Who's genius idea was that, Wanda?!" Pietro yelled.

"Well, did you have a better idea!?" Wanda snapped back. She quickly jumped up and threw a ball of energy toward a group of gunmen. She ducked back behind the table when more bullets rocketed through the air in her direction.

"Yeah, like the Avengers are going to welcome us with outstretched arms after this!"

"Would you two stop arguing and focus on, well I don't know, STAYING ALIVE!" Alene was starting to get frustrated. With everything going on around her, she was starting to become really stressed out. "Why are we even here? You two never filled me in on this part of the mission."

A grenade went off somewhere near their hiding spot. It made the floor shake and almost blew out their eardrums. "Okay, now I'm pissed!" Pietro shouted as he got up and ran around the room. Yelps and groans of pain could barely be heard amongst the gunshots and loud booms going off.

The three of them didn't have a lot of experience out in the field, but they did know how to fight in even the most complex situations. Pietro was suddenly by their sides again. "We need to get out of here," He said in between heavy and labored breaths. "There is no point in even trying to get through these guys and to the Avengers. It's a death wish to even attempt to get through the lobby. Even if we miraculously made it past, we'll be shot on sight as soon as we reach the top floors. This was a stupid idea."

Alene took a risk and looked over the top of the coffee table at the lobby doors. "The door is about twenty feet away, more or less," She turned back to her two comrades. "We can make it." She was determined.

"Alene-" Wanda started to protest, but Alene cut her off.

"We can. I know we can," She insisted, "We have been in way more stressful situations than this. Remember in training when we had to cross a field under heavy gunfire?" They nodded their heads, recalling the event. "That was over a hundred feet across yet we made it out with only a few bruises and scrapes from the thorn bushes."

"I think we should give it a try," Pietro nodded his head. He felt his brotherly pride swell up in his chest. His little sister was growing up. "Besides, it's better than being sitting ducks and allowing them to eventually take us." Alene and Pietro turned to look at Wanda, waiting for her response.

It didn't take long for her to agree. "Fine, but let's stay together," Wanda suggested, "Plus, with us being back-to-back it'll make it much easier for you to put a shield around us." She instructed Alene. They nodded their heads in agreement. In unison, the three shot up to their feet and positioned themselves into a triangle-type formation with their shoulders touching each other. Alene put a shield around them which allowed them to make their way to the exit.

They were almost there when all of a sudden a smoke bomb was thrown into the lobby. It exploded with a loud boom and emitted dark grey smoke that was impossible to see through.

"Ah, crap," Alene muttered to herself. "Wanda! Can you move the smoke back to create a five-foot diameter around us?" However, there was no response. She quickly realized she couldn't feel Wanda pushed up against her like she was a few seconds ago.
