Steve was upset and confused. He sat on the couch, wondering why Bucky was suddenly uninterested in spending time with him. He'd been doing so well, Steve had almost forgotten what he was. The sudden change of attitude had Steve suspicious. He just hoped Bucky wasn't going through a relapse.

That was when he heard the screams. He sprinted down the hallway, almost missing Bucky's closed door. He stopped and tried to open the door. Bucky had locked it from within. He pounded on the door, yelling at Bucky to let him in.

"Bucky. Bucky! Let me in Buck! James!" Steve said, becoming so desperate that he used Bucky's real name.

Bucky continued to scream and Steve had no choice than to break down the door. He threw his weight at the wooden door, hoping it would budge even the smallest bit. He tried again and again as Bucky continued to scream.

Several tries later, Steve heard a cracking noise and the door shattered inward. He crashed into the room to find Bucky in the corner on the bed, curled in a ball and screaming. He rushed forward and desperately tried to pull Bucky away from the wall and into his arms.

"Get back!" Bucky screamed, tears running like a waterfall down his front.

"Bucky, I don't know what's going on, but you need to calm down!" Steve yelled back over Bucky's screaming.

"Steve stay away!" Bucky yelled again, kicking and punching.

Bucky knew that if Steve got too close, he could hurt him. He needed to keep him as far away as possible.

"Bucky, stop that! I can help you!" Steve yelled over Bucky's wailing.

"No Steve, you can't. Get away before I hurt you!" Bucky threatened.

"Bucky. Bucky, listen. I'm not leaving you. I want to know what's going on. I'm with you until the end of the line, remember buddy?" Steve was crying too now, becoming scared.

Bucky stopped struggling and went limp, staring at Steve with pained eyes. He was crying and crawled toward Steve. He would fight off the Winter Soldier, no matter what it took for this moment. He crawled into Steve's arms and buried his face in Steve's chest, soaking his shirt with tears.

"Are you ready to tell me what's going on?" Steve said after letting Bucky cry and trying to comfort him. He hugged his shaking form and kissed him on the head repeatedly, mumbling encouragement.

"It... It was him. He came back." Bucky admitted to Steve.

"Why?" Steve said.

He wasn't surprised, he'd suspected that this was why Bucky was acting this way.

"Back in Clint's apartment, what you said to me, it brought flashbacks. I've had these voices. In my head. I didn't want to tell you because I didn't want you to worry. But they're always there and they want me to kill you Steve. I push them out, but they keep coming back. And all of a sudden, I had a whole rush of flashbacks and he came back. The Winter Soldier is back. I'm trying to keep him out, to take control, but it's so hard Steve." Bucky said breaking down at the end.

"Bucky, as long as I am alive, you will always be safe. Till the end of the line. I'm going to get you through this and just know that I love you." Steve said, pulling Bucky closer.

"You know what Steve?" Bucky said, looking up at Steve with testy eyes. "I think I love you too." He finished, tears running down his face.

Bucky leaned up, finally letting himself do something he'd wanted to do for years, but had never allowed himself. He kissed Steve. It was long, and sweet and good. It was sensitive and powerful and everything they'd thought it would be. And in that moment, Bucky was okay.
