One More Time [Keith Powers]

I took my time getting out of my car. I reached in the back seat and grabbed my bags. Once I closed my car door I heard my name being yelled. "Ashley!!! I missed you so much baby!" I laughed as Mama Jen squeezed me.

I've known this woman since I was 18. Her eldest son and I was once married. We divorced 4 years ago, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't sceptical about getting married straight out of high school in the first place. But it's whatever, I'm over it.

"Hey sis, let me get these bags for you." Kevin said hugging me before grabbing my bags. "Awe look who's being sweet. Let me enjoy this moment while I can." I said teasing him. He bumped into me before running into the house. "I missed you too mama. How have you been." I questioned as we walked in together.

"Fine. I'm happy to see you. Finally a Thanksgiving with all of my babies." She said gushing as she walked into the kitchen. "Where's big Keith?" I asked. Usually he's right in the living room. "He's still at work he'll be home around 12 or 1 in the morning." Mama Jen said seasoning her meats.

"Where's Kaylan and Sky?" I asked. "Kay is out with her friend and Sky is on her way home. Today was her friends birthday so she's been with her all day. Hopefully she'll be ready to knock out when she gets home." I laughed and shook my head at mama Jen.

I felt my side get pinched and quickly jumped, but Kevin ran over by his mother before I could hit him. "Go ahead boy and start with those pies." I heard Kevin sigh as he got the sweet potatoes out and began putting them in a pot. I laughed at the fact that he thought he wasn't about to put in work.

"I don't know why you laughing. Miss busy body. Go ahead and get into something real comfortable cause those collards need to be cut up." I sighed and nodded as I walked upstairs.

As I walked into the room I slept in, I kicked off my heels. I looked beside the dresser at the big corkboard that so many pictures were pinned to. Pictures of myself, the family, even some of our high school teachers. I took off my dress and took a quick shower. Once I was done, I went ahead and put on my pajamas.

I walked downstairs and grabbed a knife and scissors. Kevin passed me a pot and a trash bag. I went and sat at the dining room table and began cutting up the greens the old fashioned way. Mama turned on the radio and they were already playing Christmas songs. I don't know why everyone is hyping up Christmas this year. We celebrate every year.

Thankfully about a hour later Kaylan and her boyfriend showed up and helped me with the greens. "You know he's coming this year right?" Kaylan asked. I nodded and looked at Skylar as she danced to Destiny's Child 8 days of Christmas. "He's bringing some girl with him. But I'm just happy he's coming." She said shaking her head. "As you should. No matter what he's your brother. Blood at that. It's whatever, good for him. He needs someone."

"I guess we just gone act like you weren't his someone. Ok then." She must have forgotten she's not so good at whispering cause I definitely heard that. After another hour I asked Kay and her boo to take over for me. I kissed mama Jens cheek before I put Sky in the tub. Once she was out, she jumped into her pajamas and slid into bed with me. I continued my stories about the places I've traveled to as she slipped into a deep sleep with me following afterwards.
