Chapter 9 - The First Proposal

Flashback continues...

          After the game was over, Priya walked towards Surya, smiling. "Now I have to play the radio in loud speaker and make you stay awake every night," Surya joked. "You made a mess in the first two games, so I did the same in the last one," Priya said smiling, "Tit for tat." Surya just smiled admiring her playfulness. "I know all the students in the batch. I know you're wearing a mask, but I still feel that I haven't seen you before," Priya asked. Surya just smiled and without any reply, he walked slowly away from her. Priya was confused, "Oi, er....Batman," she called out referring to his mask. Surya quickly turned to face her with a wide smile. Only then did she realize that this was 'the Batman' who was following her wherever she went.

           Surya walked with the wide smile towards Priya. "Batman?" she asked. He nodded still smiling gleefully. "You should have told me in the beginning itself. Then I would have aimed the balloons correctly at you," she said smiling. Surya didn't say anything but still kept smiling, he was actually blushing now. "You're not from the batch," Priya folded her arms and asked, "What do you even know about me?" "You're Priya Srinivasan," Surya winked and went on, "You're one of the best students in school. Though your parents and grandparents are not alive, you work hard to make their dreams come true by studying medicine. You've applied for the medical college in Chennai and will be joining in three months. I know everything about you, from your favourite actor to your favourite meal."

          Priya raised her left eyebrow. "Well," she said, "I'm not surprised. After all, you should be knowing more things about me after following me for two whole months." Surya just smiled. "Look," she let out a sigh, "I'll talk to you frankly. I don't know if your love is true or fake. You know so much about me, but I have no single clue about you." "You want me to remove my mask Priya?" Surya was about to remove his mask, but Priya stopped him, "No no no. Looks never mattered to me, and it never will. I see beauty in people's face through their character."

          Surya was very much impressed. He fell on his knees in front of Priya and spoke, "I can't resist it anymore Priya. You impress me with every single word that comes out of your mouth." He took out a small red box out of his pocket and opened it. A gold ring with a small diamond was lying in it. "I love you Priya. Will you marry me?" Surya openly proposed Priya. "Oi, get up. Everybody's watching us," she said embarrassed. He looked around and quickly stood up. Priya spoke again, "Listen. I'm telling you again and again. I know nothing about you. May be we can get to know each other." Surya loved the idea.

          Before he could reply, there was an announcement, "Ladies and Gentlemen. The special guests have arrived, kindly remove your masks." "Appa," Surya mumbled to himself. He pulled one of Priya's hands and quickly placed the red box into it. Then he walked quickly towards the backdoor. "Oi, the ring," Priya shouted to him. "Keep it with you. It's made specially for you. Next week..February forteenth...Valentine's day...four o' clock...I'll meet you at the usual coffee shop you go to," Surya shouted back and didn't forget to wink before disappearing into the crowd.
