My mom always said try your hardest and you'll never fail. But failures not what I'm afraid of, I'm afraid of acceptance of love of never being cared about. All those things scare me to death until one day my fear was like an ocean wave and I was swallowed I took a deep path where no one can return.
That one faitful day was when the only people that loved, accepted, and cared about me left this Earth. My whole family left to go get me a birthday surprise for my 16th birthday and left me behind and told me they would be back. I was sooo happy. My family wasn't rich, we didn't have much money but we made do. So I had been asking since I was little to get a car on my 16th birthday and the thought that it was finally here made me go bonkers. My little brother had been hinting the whole weekend about the sweet thing that I was going to get.
I waited for hours for them to come back I just assumed that the car dealership was taking a while. Later on I would learn not to be so naïve. When I heard the knock on my door I was sooooo ecstatic that swung the door open and hugged the person at the door. The cop was unprepared for the hug and fell. I helped the cop up and apologized Once I realized they weren't there I awkwardly asked the cop where my parents were and why he was there instead. His only reply " You might want to sit down for this". I looked up confused at the officer.
He said "Your parents were in an accident. They were driving your new car and their car back home from the dealership when a toxic waste truck slipped out of control and the waste spilled out and the gas cap was loose on your car and the car blew up killing your mom on impact, then the explosion carried on and blew up the truck with toxic waste and the car behind and that killed your little brother and dad on impact."
I slid down to the ground and sobbed for the longest time. The officer was waiting patiently obviously he had gone through this before. As I stood up with my legs shaking I asked what to do now. He said "You have an ex-step-brother who now lives in the mountains of Montana he will be watching you til you qualify as an adult. Today may be a stinky birthday for you but I see this as a learning experience to become a better person I believe everything happens for a reason, you may not know it yet but life beats you up soooo learn and go on from here." I said my thank you's and packed my bags and I was off to Montana leaving behind all my friends that I didn't have all the life I didn't have but I just couldn't let go of all the happy memories here.
As the plane was landing I couldn't help liking it better than back at Texas where the saying is "the grass is always greener on the other side" but all I can see is dead grass. Anyway I don't know how I'll live I'm soooo scrawny that all the boys mistake me for a toothpick. Just kidding I've never had a boyfriend let alone get a guy to talk to me. As I stepped out of the plane there was just one person outside who I couldn't make out to be so I continued walking with my suitcase. As I was almost there I felt a hand on my shoulder as I looked up I tripped and fell over my clumsy feet . I had to be tall didn't I. Guys had such an easy life with their beautiful eyes and nice hair. Oh wait I'm not talking about all guys I'm talking about this guy whoops. "Um hello, Earth to Janessa." I stuttered "How do you know my name?" still awestruck by his looks. He said "First off I'm the person to pick you up, second off you have your name on your name tag." "Oh yeah sorry just a little tired that's all." He stuck his hand out and said "Mike". I shook his hand and said "Janessa but you already know that."
I stood there staring at this boy in front of me and wondered how it was fair to be related to him after all that had happened. He had a sad look in his eyes. I didn't push because I knew my boundaries.
