I struggle to believe him after seeing the picture laying on the floor.
It was a picture of me, my mom, and my dad but, it was extremely old. I was crossed out with a red marker. I turned it over, shaking. There were two notes written on the back, each in different hand writing. I carefully read the first one.
"Me and Daddy will always love you Dan." - 1997.
This was when I was six years old. My eyes slowly traveled down to the second note, which was more sloppy.
"This isn't over. We will find you. We will always hate you. I wish you were never my son and your father agrees."
The tears fall harder then they ever have. I could tell that Phil was reading the notes over my shoulder and trying to stay strong. I could feel his grip tighten around me.
He grabbed the photo out of my hand and quickly crumpled it up. He threw it across the room with a loud grunt. He grabbed my chin and made me look at him.
"It isn't true Dan, they can't get you." I could see the anger in his expression. "Let's get your stuff."
I nod and wipe away the tears, trusting him. We walk up to my room. The scent of blood punches me in the face. I quickly pull out some suitcases from my closet and forcefully shove stuff into it. Phil starts packing my pajamas but, I suddenly hear him sigh excitedly. I look over.
"What did you find?" I ask
He turns around and is holding my old dinosaur onesie.
"YOU NEED TO PUT IT ON!" Phil said with a giant smile.
"No, I-" I start
"PUT IT ON!" He yells happily.
"Ok, fine." I sigh
I grab the onesie and run into my closet. I quickly change and walk out fabulously. Phil smiles with his tongue poking out of his teeth and he starts jumping up and down.
"AHHHHH YOU LOOK SO CUTE!" He yells.
I giggle at him and cross my arms.
"Alright, let's continue packing." I sigh and continue to pack stuff.
-Time Skip because I'm lazy-
We finally finished packing up my car. I was still wearing the onesie because Phil wouldn't let me change. We were about to leave when I heard a women call for us. I turned around and saw my neighbor walking over to me.
"Hello, your name is Dan, right?" She asked
"Yeah." I whisper.
"I heard about you on the news and I want to say I'm so sorry. I can't believe I lived next to the monsters and never knew." She rambled.
"Oh, right." I sigh.
"Anyway, I thought you might be moving because of it so, me and my daughter made you something." She semi squealed.
"Oh, well thank you." I said surprised.
"Sweetie, come bring them out." The women shouted.
A little girl, probably around 7 years old, waddled out of the house next door. She was holding a small tray. She walked over and held her arms up. On the tray was a line of cupcakes that spelled out "Good Luck." I couldn't help but, smile like a goof. I grabbed the tray and set it down on the roof of my car and kneeled down to her height. She had the most adorable smile on her face.
"That's really sweet of you." I say in a gentle tone.
She suddenly pulls me into a hug with her little arms. I hug her back and a surge of joy flows through my body. At that moment I believed Phil completely. I was finally going to be happy. I let go and stand back up.
"Thank you so much, it means so much to me." I grin at the women before we all here footsteps. We look at the house and Phil was holding a box that was clearly a two person thing.
"Phil, put that down and come over here." I shout.
Phil instantly puts it down and looks over. He was confused but, walked over next to me and looked at the two. The little girl waved at him making him smile.
"Phil, these are my neighbors, they gave my a little goodbye present." I say while pointing at the plates.
"Hello Phil, you must be a friend of Dans?" She holds out a hand and asks.
"Boyfriend." Phil takes her hand and shakes it. I see the little girls face light up.
"Mum always teaches me about people like you." She yells excitedly.
Me and Phil look at each other nervously and the mother gently laughs to herself.
"Umm, w-what does she say?" Phil asked in a worried tone.
"Mum says that if a boy likes a boy or a girl likes a girl, it is normal and should never be judged." The girl yells.
Me and Phil sigh, feeling relieved.
"I'm sorry, she tends to word stuff weirdly. Anyway, it looks like you two are busy, carry on." The mother giggles to herself before walking away. The little girl flashes on last smile before walking away. Me and Phil look at each other before he pulls me into a tight hug.
"Oh, I love my little dinosaur." He giggles.
I freeze as I realize I had that entire conversation... in a dinosaur onesie.
