11. Hotdogs

"What's taking them so long?" Yoshi wondered. He was waiting for Mario and Luigi to arrive at the Maple Park. The three of them, along with 47 other people, had signed up for the  75th Annual Mushroom Kingdom Hotdog Eating Contest. Yoshi was extremely hungry because he hadn't eaten at all the day before and he hoped his hunger would motivate him to eat a lot.

"Hey, Yoshi!" Mario called out as he and Luigi approached Yoshi.

"Hey," Yoshi waved. "Did you starve yourself yesterday like I told you to?"

"Yup!" Luigi replied. "And it worked."

"When's the competition going to start?" Mario questioned.

"In about half an hour," Yoshi stated. "Let's get some good seats now, while there isn't a lot of people here yet."

*30 minutes later*

All of the contestants had arrived and each one got their own chair and table. The chairs and tables were forming a pentagon. The host went to the center of the pentagon and began to speak through a mic. "Good morning, contestants!" he said cheerfully. "Welcome to the 75th Annual Mushroom Kingdom Hotdog Eating Contest! I will now review the rules with you. And be sure to pay attention because you will be disqualified if you don't follow the rules. So, there are five judges including myself and each of us will time ten contestants on how much hotdogs they can eat in ten minutes. We will then compare all of the times and announce the five contestants with the best time. I will announce the winners right after everyone has been timed. The contestant that wins first place will receive 1000 coins and will be able to eat at Frank's Franks for free for one year."

"Frank's Franks?" a contestant piped up.

"Whoa!" another one exclaimed.

"Ahem. Moving on. The contestant that wins second place will receive 1000 coins. And the contestants that win third, fourth, and fifth place will receive 500 coins. The first set of contestants are now being provided with an automatic hotdog generator which provides an infinite amount of hotdogs. Remember that you are only allowed to get one hotdog from the generator at a time. The first set of contestants may start as soon as their judge starts the timer. I wish you all good luck." The host concluded.

"But, we all know who's gonna win this year," Mario whispered to Luigi.

"Yup, the same person who has been winning for the past decade," Luigi whispered back.

*after all of the contestants have been timed*

"I will now announce the results. We will see if anyone beat last year's highest number and the all time record of 164," the host announced. The contestants gasped. "First, I shall announce the fifth place winner who ate 63 hotdogs... Luigi Mario! Congratulations, you beat your score least year of 58 hotdogs!" the host exclaimed. The contestants applauded as Luigi went to claim his prize.

"Woo!" Mario and Yoshi cheered.

"The fourth place winner who ate 70 hotdogs is... Tee Tless. Impressive, considering you lost your teeth after eating a concrete muffin from Princess Peach herself!" The host grinned.

"Hank roo," A Toad waved and showed a crooked, toothless grin.

"The third place winner who ate 81 hotdogs is... Mario Mario! What a high number, but I'm not surprised considering the fact that you're one of the biggest foodies in town," the host laughed.

"Thanks a lot, it was worth it," Mario said as he claimed his prize.

"The second place winner who ate 83 hotdogs is...  Indigo Violet! You clearly showed lots of effort today and I hope you know it paid off," the host said.

"You rock, bro!" Indigo's sister who was also in the competition, Lavender exclaimed.

"And finally, I will announce the first place winner. This person must have been extremely hungry today. Our winner for this year beat our all time record by eating 175 hotdogs in ten minutes! That is about 17 and a half hotdogs per minute. Now ladies and gentlemen, our winner is... Yoshi!" the host announced and applauded along with the other contestants.

"Didn't he win last year?" one contestant whispered to a contestant next to him.

"This is in fact Yoshi's 12th year in a row to win the Annual Mushroom Kingdom Hotdog Eating Contest. And that means this is his 12th year to eat at Frank's Franks for free," the host informed. Yoshi quickly returned to his seat after claiming his prizes and getting his picture taken.

"Congrats yet again," Luigi told Yoshi.

"Thanks, but guys?" he said slowly.

"What?" Mario questioned.

"I'm hungry again."
