Foods Permitted and Forbidden

(Leviticus 11:1-23)

The Lord communicated to Moses and Aaron, saying to them,

"Speak to the children of Israel and say, 'These are the animals you may eat from all the animals on the earth:

Any animal that has a split hoof completely divided and chews the cud among the animals, you may eat.

However, you must not eat these that chew the cud or have the split hoof: the camel, for it chews the cud but does not have a split hoof; it is unclean for you.

And the rock hyrax, because it chews the cud but does not have a split hoof; it is unclean for you.

The hare, although it chews the cud, does not have a divided hoof; it is unclean for you.

The swine, despite having a divided hoof and being cloven-footed, does not chew the cud; it is unclean for you.

You shall not eat their flesh, nor touch their carcasses; they are unclean for you.

You may eat anything from the waters that has fins and scales, whether found in seas or rivers.

But any sea or river creatures without fins and scales, or any living thing in the waters, are detestable to you.

They shall be an abomination to you; do not eat their flesh, and regard their carcasses as abominable.

Any in the waters without fins or scales shall be an abomination to you.

These you shall regard as abominable among the birds; they shall not be eaten for they are an abomination: the eagle, the ossifrage, and the osprey,

The vulture, and the kite according to its kind,

And every raven according to its kind.

The owl, the nighthawk, the cuckoo, and the hawk of its kind,

The little owl, the cormorant, and the great owl,

The swan, the pelican, and the gier eagle,

The stork, the heron of its kind, the lapwing, and the bat.

All flying insects that walk on all fours are to be detestable to you.

You may eat any flying insects that walk on all fours and have jointed legs above their feet to hop on the earth.

You may eat these: the various kinds of locusts, the bald locust, the beetle, and the grasshopper.

But all other flying insects that have four legs you must detest.
