The Previous Command to Enter Canaan
(Deuteronomy 1:1-8)
These are the words that Moses spoke to all Israel on the east side of the Jordan in the wilderness, in the plain opposite the Red Sea, between Paran, Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth, and Dizahab.
It is an eleven-day journey from Horeb by the way of Mount Seir to Kadesh-barnea.
In the fortieth year, on the first day of the eleventh month, Moses spoke to the children of Israel according to all that the Lord had commanded him to give to them.
After he had defeated Sihon, the king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon, and Og, the king of Bashan, who lived in Ashtaroth and Edrei,
On the east side of the Jordan in the land of Moab, Moses began to expound this law, saying:
The Lord our God spoke to us at Horeb, saying, 'You have stayed long enough at this mountain.
Break camp and advance into the hill country of the Amorites; go to all the neighboring territories in the Arabah, in the mountains, in the Western Foothills, in the Negev and along the coast, to the land of the Canaanites and to Lebanon, as far as the great river, the Euphrates.
See, I have given you this land. Go in and take possession of the land the Lord swore he would give to your forefathers—to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob—and to their descendants after them.'
