The First Census of Israel

(Numbers 1:1-54)

The Lord communicated to Moses in the Sinai wilderness, within the meeting tent, on the first day of the second month, in the second year following their departure from Egypt, proclaiming,

"Count the entire assembly of the Israelites by their clans and families, listing every man by name, one by one.

You and Aaron are to count all the men in Israel twenty years old or more who are able to serve in the army.

A leader from each tribe should be with you, each one the head of his family.

These are the names of the men who are to assist you: From the tribe of Reuben, Elizur son of Shedeur.

From Simeon: Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai.

From Judah: Nahshon son of Amminadab.

From Issachar: Nethaneel son of Zuar.

From Zebulun: Eliab son of Helon.

From the descendants of Joseph: from Ephraim: Elishama son of Ammihud; from Manasseh: Gamaliel son of Pedahzur.

From Benjamin: Abidan, the son of Gideoni.

From Dan: Ahiezer, the son of Ammishaddai.

From Asher: Pagiel, the son of Ocran.

From Gad: Eliasaph, the son of Deuel.

From Naphtali: Ahira, the son of Enan.

These individuals were the eminent members of the assembly, leaders of their fathers' tribes, and commanders of thousands in Israel.

Moses and Aaron then took these men whose names had been specifically mentioned.

They gathered the entire assembly on the first day of the second month. They recorded their ancestries by their families and by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names from those twenty years old and above, tallying by their headcount.

Just as the Lord had commanded Moses, he counted them in the wilderness of Sinai.

The descendants of Reuben, Israel's firstborn son, were listed by their generations, by their families, and by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, head by head, every male twenty years old and above, all who were fit for military service.

The total number of individuals from the tribe of Reuben was forty-six thousand and five hundred.

From the descendants of Simeon, by their generations, according to their families and ancestral houses, the count of all males twenty years old and above, eligible for military service, was:

Fifty-nine thousand and three hundred from the tribe of Simeon.

For the descendants of Gad, by their generations, according to their families and ancestral houses, the count of names of all males twenty years old and above, eligible for military service, was:

Forty-five thousand six hundred and fifty from the tribe of Gad.

From the descendants of Judah, organized by their generations, families, and paternal households, all men twenty years old and above who were fit for military service were counted.

The total number of men from the tribe of Judah who were counted was seventy-four thousand six hundred.

From the descendants of Issachar, organized by their generations, families, and paternal households, all men twenty years old and above who were fit for military service were counted.

The total number of men from the tribe of Issachar who were counted was fifty-four thousand four hundred.

From the descendants of Zebulun, organized by their generations, families, and paternal households, all men twenty years old and above who were fit for military service were counted.

The number of individuals from the tribe of Zebulun was fifty-seven thousand four hundred.

From the descendants of Joseph, specifically the tribe of Ephraim, by their generations, families, and paternal households, counting every name from those twenty years old and above, all who were fit for military service:

The count for the tribe of Ephraim totaled forty thousand five hundred.

Among the descendants of Manasseh, by their generations, families, and paternal households, counting every name from those twenty years old and above, all who were fit for military service:

The number from the tribe of Manasseh was thirty-two thousand two hundred.

From the descendants of Benjamin, by their generations, families, and paternal households, all those named who were twenty years old and above, capable of going to war:

The number of those from the tribe of Benjamin was thirty-five thousand four hundred.

From the descendants of Dan, by their generations, families, and paternal households, all those named who were twenty years old and above, capable of going to war:

The number of those from the tribe of Dan was sixty-two thousand seven hundred.

From the descendants of Asher, by their generations, families, and paternal households, all those named who were twenty years old and above, capable of going to war:

The total number of individuals from the tribe of Asher was forty-one thousand and five hundred.

From the descendants of Naphtali, all males twenty years old or more who were able to serve in war were counted by their ancestral houses and family names.

The count for the tribe of Naphtali totaled fifty-three thousand and four hundred.

These were the men counted by Moses, Aaron, and the twelve leaders of Israel, each representing his family.

Thus, the total number of men of Israel able to go to war, twenty years old and above, was tallied by their ancestral houses.

The total of those numbered was six hundred thousand, three thousand, five hundred and fifty.

However, the Levites, according to their ancestral tribe, were not included in this numbering.

For the Lord had commanded Moses:

"Do not count the tribe of Levi, nor include them in the census of the children of Israel.

Instead, assign the Levites to the tabernacle of the covenant, all its furnishings, and everything related to it. They are to carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings; they will serve it and camp around it."

When the tabernacle is to move, the Levites are responsible for taking it down; when it is to be set up, the Levites shall erect it. Any outsider who approaches shall be put to death.

The Israelites shall encamp each by his own camp, and each man by his own standard, throughout their armies.

The Levites, however, shall encamp around the tabernacle of the testimony, so that there may be no anger on the congregation of the children of Israel. The Levites shall maintain the responsibilities of the tabernacle of the testimony.

The children of Israel did everything just as the Lord commanded Moses.
