If Damien could describe Courtney it in one word, it would be impossible because Courtney is so many things. He usually likes to call her bombastic, but after a certain experience in a Taco Bell at midnight, he calls her hero.
Writing for Courtney can usually go way past work hours. Once she's on something, she can't stop.
Her coworkers will often assign someone to stay with her when this happens, and tonight was Damien's turn. He didn't mind. It gave him a chance to catch up on work himself and spend time with Courtney.
"Ok!" Courtney exclaimed, throwing her hands in the air, "I'm done!"
"You finished it?!"
"Nope! But I'm done." She stood and scooped her jacket up, "I need a break...So you wanna go to Taco Bell?"
"We could just post-mates-"
"No, I...Please, Damien. It's right down the street and it's open late." She slipped the jacket on her arms, "You don't have to come."
"Why, yes I do, little lady." He quickly jumped up and opened the door for her.
She smiled softly, "Thank you. Honestly, I just really need some fresh air. Maybe that will help me get an actual good ending to this sketch."
"I'm sure you can do it," Damien offered happily.
If you know Damien, you know that he is very particular about touching. Everyday in the Smosh fam is very respectful of this, but there'll be that 1 in a 100 people that get to him.
That 1 person was at Taco Bell.
Courtney ordered her food before leaving to use the restroom, Damien promising to get her food for her.
He was just minding his own business, standing by the counter scrolling through nonsense on his phone.
"Hey, you're from Smosh right?"
A women around his age was excitedly staring at him.
"Yeah, I'm Damien, the new guy," he added with a chuckle.
"Wow...I didn't realize how muscular you were. It must be because you're around Shayne so much," she said with an awkward laugh.
Damien nodded, "Everyone looks small next to Shayne ."
She said something too quick to understand, and the next thing he knew was this girl squeezing his arm.
He winced.
What was he supposed to do?
She wasn't hurting him, but he just didn't like it.
None of these strangers would know...what was he supposed to do?
The woman stepped closer to him.
"Hey!" A blur of blonde hair slides between them, "He doesn't like that."
"Oh, c'mon, you're just-"
"Leave him alone," Courtney repeated again, slowly annunciating each word. Courtney carefully watched as the girl rolled her eyes and stepped away.
Damien finally let himself breath, "Courtney, I... I didn't-"
"It's ok," she said gently, "You're safe now, ok? Everything is ok."
He exhaled slowly, concentrating on her words...on her...on her words...on her.
The two left pretty quickly after that. Courtney was completely prepared to leave her work behind and take Damien home herself, but he assured her that wouldn't be necessary.
"Well, I can't work anymore," Courtney said bluntly, "I think we can both go home now."
"You sure?"
"Yes. The Taco Bell is eaten, Damien, and the script is almost done. We're all good here."
She walked him to his car.
"Courtney," he started, "Thank you, for what you did. I know I'm a guy and-"
"Oh c'mon," she scoffed, "Screw those stupid gender roles...we can save each other, Damien."
He grinned, "Yeah, I guess we can."
She wanted to hug him so bad, but she also didn't want to overstep his boundaries. So Courtney moved away to go to her own car.
"Courtney! Wait!" Damien run up to her, "Courtney, I...Do you want to get coffee tomorrow? Just us...please."
"Well," she winked, "I think I can work it into my schedule."
The next day, they went out for coffee...and the day after that....and the day after that...
They never did go back to that Taco Bell.
But Damien knew if he ever ventured into a Taco Bell late at night, he would have Courtney Miller there to protect him.
