It had been a year since the outbreak, and a year since Courtney had been in her own.
She had lost everything-her family, her friends, her whole life.
She was trying to make her way to Oregon, where a supposed safe camp should be, but she really just wanted out of California at this point. She had a bike, a backpack of clothes and supplies, a baseball bat, and the open road. She learned very quickly on not to trust anyone.
She often wondered what the point was anymore.
A year after the break out, she was half way through Nevada in a back road in the desert. The sun had just rose, and the temperature was already rising.
She exhaled deeply, absorbing the sounds of nature around her.
"Hey! " someone yelled, "Hey! Help!"
Courtney grimaced and kept riding. Those voices could be someone trying to catch her. It wasn't worth finding out.
"Please help!"
She rode her bike faster until she couldn't hear it anymore.
Once she was sure they were gone, she stopped her bike to take a drink of water.
"Hey, why didn't you help?"
Courtney whisked around. A man with black hair and cracked glasses was standing behind her.
She scrambled to pick up her bat.
"I don't want to hurt you." He said calmly, "My name is Joven. I have a camp a few miles from here."
"Leave me alone."
"How are you alone? No one survives alone."
"Go!"
The man who called himself Joven sighed, "Sorry, I really didn't want to do this."
He pulled out a gun. She turned to run, but he hit her with the blunt before she could."I can't believe you! You kidnapped someone!" A woman's voice yelled, "She could be dangerous! She could be infected!"
"I don't think she is."
"Then why did you kidnap her?! She probably scared out of her mind!"
Courtney slowly pushed herself up. She was laying on a blanket in a tent. Her head was pounding, and they people yelling outside weren't helping.
"You know what, Joven? I don't even want to know!"
The woman stepped inside the tent. Her braided hair was purple, with black roots growing in. She was wearing jeans, combat boots, a flannel, and a pouch that tied around her thigh.
"Hi. I'm Mari and I would like to apologize for the idiot that kidnapped you." She walked forward and sat next to Courtney, "I promise we're good people. We're weird, but good."
"I'm Courtney. Um, so that guy-"
"Is an idiot, like I said, and I promise you do not have to be around him, if you want to stay."
"You would let me?"
"Yeah. It's safe here and you don't seem crazy."
"How are you so...-"
"Nice?" Mari smiled, "I was alone too, at first. But these two guys, Ian and Anthony, found me. They were living here by themselves. But now there's nearly 20 of us."
"Are they ok with me?"
"I haven't told them yet."
"Want if they don't want me here?"
Mari placed her hand over Courtney's, "I promise they do." Mari smiled again, "C'mon, lets go. You can meet them now."
She took Courtney's hand once they stood, "I live in this tent with another girl, Boze. You can stay with us." She lead Courtney outside the tent, where Joven was still standing.
He sheepishly rubbed the back of his head, "I'm sorry I kidnapped you."
"It's ok."
"Hey, and I'm not a total idiot."
"I guess we'll have to find out," she joked.
"C'mon," Mari pulled Courtney down the line of tents.
The people looked at her, but not with hate, with curiosity and joy.
"This is Ian and Anthony's tent," Mari explained, "Are you ready?"
"I think so."
"Relax, ok? It is not that intense."
The two girls entered the tent.
Two men turned to face them, one short with longish hair, the other tall with curly hair.
"Hey guys, this is Courtney. Joven kidnapped her, but she's alone, like I was."
The shorter one smiled, "Hi, Courtney. I'm Ian, and this Anthony." They shook her hand.
"Where do you come from?" Anthony asked.
"California."
"Hey, so are we," he said, "Look, you are welcome to stay here, if you want. We are happy to have you."
Courtney grinned, "Really?"
"Yeah?," Ian responded, "Of course."
"I would love that. Thank you so much. I don't-"
"Hey, it's ok," Ian said, "We've all needed somewhere. Now, what did you do before the breakout?"
"I worked at a pharmacy, and I hated it, but now I have a brain full of pharmaceutical knowledge."
"That's great!" Ian exclaimed, "We need someone on medicine."
"I'm not a doctor-"
"And we're not leaders, but look at us."
"More like parents," Mari commented, "Hey, I can take her to Flitz and he can do his thing."
"Sounds good. Nice to meet you, Courntey. We're very happy to have you stay with us."
Mari lead her back out of the tent. A short man with a neatly trimmed beard walked up to them.
"Is this the girl Joven kidnapped?"
"I'm glad that's my new reputation. I'm Courtney, by the way."
"I'm Sohinki."
"Nice to meet you. Are you going to see Flitz?"
"Yes," Mari answered, "Oh, shoot! I'm on lunch, aren't I?"
"Yeah, but I can take Courtney," he looked at her, "That ok?"
"Sure."
Mari squeezed her hand reassuringly before leaving.
"Right this way," Sohinki guest urged to the tent before them."
Courtney coughed when she entered. Whoever was in there was burning a lot of incense.
"Hello. I'm Flitz." A tall black man approached them. He wasn't wearing a shirt, so Courtney tried to avoid looking at how muscular he was.
"Jeesh, Flitz, put some clothes on."
He smirked, tiring around and pulling a shirt over his head.
"I'm Courtney," she said once he turned back around, "And you-"
"I'm in charge of clothes. I make sure everyone has what they need, so what do you need?" He asked with a strange hint of sexuality that made Courtney slightly uncomfortable.
"Um, this shirt is kind of falling apart, so a new one would be nice."
"Sure thing. I'm guessing a small?" He asked as he walked to the back of the tent, where clothes where stacked on a blanket.
"Yeah, but anything you have is fine."
He handed her maroon t shirt, a gray flannel, and a purple hoodie.
"You can give what you're wearing back to me."
"But you can change in your own tent," Sohinki added.
Flitz ignored him, "Wait, Courtney, do you have sleeping clothes?"
"No, but-"
"This is a home, Courtney," Flitz said slowly, "You can have pajamas."
"Ok," she smiled,"Then I'll take some."
He quickly sifted through the clothes before producing blue sweatpants, a long sleeved purple shirt, and a gray sweatshirt.
"Trust me, it gets cold in the desert."
She smiled, "Thank you."
"Now lets go before he gets even more weird," Sohinki said, placing his hand on Courtney's back and steering out of the tent.
She scanned the camp, full of little fires and working stations.
"Do you think you're gonna like it here?"
"I think so. I've been alone for a long time." She glanced at him shyly.
"We keep each other safe."
"Have you...lost anyone?"
"Not yet," he shrugged, "I guess we're lucky."
Courtney smiled.
"C'mon, lunch is almost ready. You can meet everyone else."
They served rabbit and potatoes, which apparently was a common meal. They had a few chickens, but it was hard to grow vegetables in the desert.
Courtney was greeted by the other member. She sat next to Mari and chatted happily with the others.
"It's crazy how this all came together." Courtney whispered to Mari.
"Maybe...We were drawn together, I guess."
"Yeah, but why did I have to be drawn to Joven?"
"She's getting the idea," Wes laughed.
"Hey, look," Joven said defensively, "Of it wasn't for me, Little Miss Sunshine wouldn't be here right now."
"Hey, but she also wouldn't have a mild concussion," Noah retorted.
Courtney smiled.
