From the future

Chapter 8

~Halle's POV~

We walked to the old church on Jay mountain and I honestly was expecting better. This place was filthy but I was exhausted so I just found a spot and plopped down and fell right asleep.

I woke up around four in the morning to Johnny shaking me. "Halle, get up we need to get food and stuff." "What? Ok." I said and got up. I looked over at Pony and Lexy and they were cuddling with Lexy's leg propped up. She had fallen asleep with her back to the wall with Ponyboy's head on her lap. They were so cute together.

We walked down to the grocery store and bought a bunch of bread, baloney, peroxide, crackers a splint, some bandages, soap and scissors. Then we walked over across the street and got some cigarettes. "I can't believe we got all this stuff for $40!" Johnny said. "Yeah I'm pretty surprised." I said, I was exhausted. "Hey." Johnny said excitedly "why don't we get Gone With The Wind for Ponyboy he would love it." "Ok" I said excitedly and we went in and got the book.

"Hey guys." Ponyboy said when we walked in. "Hey, whaddaya get?" I put down the box and showed him all the stuff we got. "Oh Gone With the Wind? I've always wanted to read it. And this stuff for Lexy's ankle!" He smiled and I looked over at Lexy. She was still fast asleep with a grimace on her face.

I went over there and put a splint and bandages on it so it was secure then Ponyboy and Johnny went outside and looked for some sticks to make a crutch.

"Hey guys." Lexy said around noon. We we're almost done with the crutches. "Hey we made you something." Johnny said. "Aww thanks." Pony helped her stand up and she tried the crutches and they turned out great within an hour she was going everywhere with those things. Then we had to bleach Ponyboy's hair. "Are you kidding me? No I'm not letting you." "Ponyboy our hair is already blonde and Johnny won't look good with blonde hair. I will cut all of ours and it will be fine." I said. "Fine" he said huffing.
I cut all of their hair. Mine was to my shoulders and pony's looked pretty ok. I just  left Lexy's hair the same because it was already shoulder length.

The next four days seemed like they took forever. We just passed the time reading, playing poker and making stuff out of whatever we could find. It was pretty boring. That night I couldn't sleep because my head hurt and I was feeling really hot. So I walked outside for a while. I stood there watching the beginning of the sunrise and heard Pony come up behind me.

"Hey."
"Hi." I said
"Wow. The sunset is pretty." He said "how are you doing? You haven't talked much since we got here, you've kinda just been the caretaker of everyone."
"Oh, I'm fine. I just miss Dally and I don't feel all that well."
Just then Johnny came up behind us "my that's pretty."
Then Ponyboy received his poem
Nothing Gold Can Stay
Nature's first green is gold
Her hardest hue to hold
Her early leaf's a flower
But only so an hour
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So Dawn goes down to day
Nothing gold can stay.
"What does that mean?" I asked
"I'm not sure, I always remembered it because I never really knew what he meant by it." Ponyboy said.
"Well it's pretty I said to him."
Than tears started falling down my face
"I wish dally were here." "Hey Halle, it's gonna be alright." Johnny said pulling me into a hug. "I know." I said starting to calm down. That went back inside and I walked around looking for anything edible that wasn't baloney. I was just so sick of it. I looked up and saw a giant nest with 3 huge eggs in it. I normally wouldn't do something like that but I was dying for something different. We had all lost so much weight, my pants were so loose that they are starting to fall down. I got the eggs and looked at them through the sunlight. Nothing.

"Guys! I found some eggs!" I had Johnny build me a fire and I found a piece of bent metal to make them on. It wasn't the most sanitary but it was something. We had fried eggs and baloney and it was the best thing I had ever eaten.

The next day I woke up to some footsteps. I got up and saw dally, instant joy filled me. "Dally!" I ran to him and jumped. He caught me and I buried my face in his neck and wrapped my legs around him. With my arms around his neck I kissed him. It was the best kiss I had ever received in my whole life.
"Dally, I missed you so much."
"I missed you too." He said he sounded like he was gonna cry.
"Hey look at Ponyboy man, he's a blonde!" He laughed.
"Hey dal." He said
"Woah what happened to her." He said looking at Lexy. "She broke her ankle." I said still on him.
"Dally, it's really hard to take you seriously when she's on you like a monkey." Johnny said. I got down.
"Sorry." I said and held Dally's hand.
"Hey here's a letter from sodapop, man."
"Wait they know where we are?" Ponyboy said.
"No I "accidentally" let it slip that you were going to Texas and Two-bit wanted to go look for you." "Hey let's get something to eat, I'm starving man."
I laughed "you're starving? Try eating baloney for a week straight."
He laughed and we all got in the car.
