BEGINNING NOTE:// If you don't know what 4-Square is, I'm about to explain it! 4-Square is a game that includes four squares and you hit a ball from one square to another. You can get out if the ball hits the line when you serve it or when the ball hits more than once in your square. If you catch the ball before it touches the ground, you say "Spam!" and the person who hit it is out. It's a fun game that my middle school plays at recess. I actually thought about this idea while I was playing the game. (It was pretty funny because I gasped and literally dropped the ball out of excitement.) Anyways, ENJOY THE SMOL BOYS BACK IN MIDDLE SCHOOL!!

Recess is the best time for any kid in school. Whenever the bell rings, all chaos ensues. Every kid is running to their spots as if it's the end of the world. Balls are flying through the air, kids are getting run over, and the teachers are trying to control everything. But for the middle schoolers, recess means that it's time for the daily 4-Square Showdown that the sixth and seventh graders do every day. Every kid of all shapes and sizes in the two grades play, except for one. And that one kid would be the one and only Connor Murphy.

(WOAH FINALLY WRITING ABOUT CONNOR FOR ONCE?! Evan can't have all the spotlight... share with your boyfriend. He needs some book time.)

Ever since Connor threw the printer at Ms. G in second grade, he's been labeled as the weirdo. Connor didn't have any friends. He always sat alone at lunch, and group work was hell for him. No one wanted to be partners with the poor kid in fear of being hurt. So naturally, Connor was always alone at recess. He would watch his classmates play the showdown every day, but he was never invited to join them. They would occasionally glance over at him with a look of disgust, and then they would go back to their game. Connor never admitted it, but their looks hurt him. He felt as though he never would fit in. Until one day. (DUN DUN DUNNNN)

One Wednesday morning, a small boy named Evan Hansen noticed Connor sitting all alone. Evan always heard his classmates calling him things such as "weirdo" or "loser." He always felt horrible for Connor, but his anxiety couldn't allow him to talk to the bullies. So instead, one day Evan went over to Connor and decided it was time for him to end this.

"U-uhm.. hello?"

Connor looked up from his book and saw his crush from his class. He couldn't believe this. Evan was talking to him!

He felt his face flush before he responded.

"Uh hi? Can I help you?"
"O-oh! I was w-wondering if y-you wanted to join the g-game." Evan pointed over at their class, who was now watching them. Connor was honestly stunned. Someone had asked him to play? He honestly didn't know how to respond.
"I dunno... I would probably ruin the game. Thanks for the invite though," Connor replied looking away from Evan.

Evan's heart broke when he heard this. Instead of leaving Connor behind, he smiled and grabbed Connor's hand, pulling him up.

"D-don't worry! You could n-never ruin the g-game. C'mon, it'll be fun!" Evan said, running and pulling Connor behind him.

Connor could feel his face go red for two reasons. The first reason was that he was terrified of facing his class. He would never admit this, but Connor was actually really good at 4-Square. He enjoyed the game and often played with his younger sister, Zoe. He knew deep down that his class didn't want him playing. And the second reason was... EVAN HANSEN WAS HOLDING HIS HAND!!!! HIS CRUSH. THE EVAN HANSEN. This was too much for poor Connor.

As they approached the court, Evan dragged Connor behind him in line. Connor saw his class staring at him. He felt weird being here. He didn't fit in. What was Evan thinking? Before he could say something, Evan spoke up to the class.

"I h-hope you guys don't m-mind him j-joining. He just l-looked lonely."

Connor smiled, but his class was disgusted. However, they let him play regardless. While the game continued, Evan occasionally turned back to Connor and talked to him. Connor's nerves eventually calmed down. Talking to Evan made him feel better. But, sadly, they couldn't talk for long. It was Evan's turn to get in the game. Some kids laughed as Evan took his place in Square One, knowing how bad he was at the game. Connor immediately felt protective of the cute boy.

When the round started, the Queen (the person who's in Square 4. It can be a king or queen depending on gender) served the ball to Square 2. The boy in the square smiled as he viciously threw the ball straight into Evan's face.

Everyone started laughing. Evan panicked; his nose was bleeding, and his head hurt. Starting to cry, Evan ran to the bathroom. Connor, who was furious at this point, ignored his class and ran after Evan. He could hear the kids yelling insults at him, but he didn't care. He needed to find Evan.

Connor burst into the bathroom. He heard
crying in one of the stalls. He walked over and knocked on the stall door. The crying stopped.

"Evan? It's me, Connor. Can I come in?"

Evan sniffled, and he reluctantly opened the door before being engulfed in a hug by Connor. Evan hugged him back.

Connor was the first to pull away.

"It's ok, Evan. Kids are jerks." Evan laughed at the last part, which made Connor smile. He wiped a few of Evan's tears away.

"T-thank you, C-Connor."
"Anytime."

Evan hugged Connor again, and everything was ok.

WORD COUNT: 1000

END NOTE:// AWHH I ACTUALLY LOVED THIS!!! This came out better than I thought it would. Honestly, let's be real. Kids are jerks. Do we all agree?

I'm working on like... 4 more oneshots right now. I just quickly wrote this one so my book doesn't become dead. I hope you all enjoyed!
