Chapter 1: Valentine's Day Surprise

Three long- stemmed blue roses and a note that says " Happy Valentine's Day, Ara". It is natural to send someone roses on such occasion. But... blue roses? How unconventional... How odd. Weird! I knew it was her. But wait, the box tells me it is from a local florist. I wonder, is she back from NZ? Did she came home?... to me?

We grew up together in Pampanga. I still remember her with her torn sneakers and shorts, running in and out of our house (as if she lives there). Both my parents didn't mind her at all because they had long wanted a sibling for me. Unfortunately, my mother could only have one child.... And that was me. They were really glad to have me, anyways (sabi din naman nila).

In our younger days, our repertoire of games inlucded tug-of-war, habulan, patintero, and my personal fave hide and seek. We played these with the rest of the kids in the neighborhood. But I was particularly close to her... not only were we next-door-neighbors, our parents were good friends too. Not to mention we are of the same age [she a few months older than me, btw]. From the first time I saw that light-skinned, lanky, crinkly-nosed, wide-toothed kid next door, I knew instantly that I would never be lonely.

She taught me a lot of things--- from catching spiders and feeding the chicken (which actually was bred by my father) to playing volleyball (she was THAT good in volleyball). WE put up our own little club and would regularly have "meetings", as we called them. In all the meetings, there must be a complete attendance from the president down to the treasurer. We really didn't have much of a problem with the attendance because she was the president and the vice-president. And I was the secretary and the treasurer. Mind you we were the only members of our club.

"Ara", I never heard that voice before. But somehow, it sounded very familiar. I turned around and....
