T’was our 1st monthsary.  We were coming home from a surprise dinner Kiwi prepared for me inside Clark. We were laughing about her teacher in NZ whose dentures fell off during a lecture, when Kiwi suddenly stepped on the brakes…

“Anything wrong?”, I asked worriedly.

“My head aches. I feel a throbbing here”, she said pointing on her temple.

“Probably  sa kakatawa. Kung Makatawa ka kasi parang wala ng bukas. C’mon, let me take the wheel. I can manage. I’ll bring us home.”

“NO!. You don’t have a driver’s license yet. Just give me a few minutes and I’ll be fine. Migraine lang ‘to. Ang init kasi kanina tapos biglang pasok sa aircon”, she replied.

True to her words, the headache lasted only for a couple of minutes and she was back to her usual uber kulit self

“Napapansin ko lang. Napapadalas yang sakit sa ulo mo ha. Nagpacheck up ka na ba?”, I asked

“Migraine lang to, promise! I’ve had this for ages. May gamot naman. Naiwan ko lang. Hihi..,” Aba’t tumawa pa ang loka.

“Sa susunod, plese lang, ‘wag ng iiwan ang gamot ha. Kundi lang kita mahal, aawayin kita”, I added.

“Sabihin mo, takot ka lang sa akin. Haha!”, hirit nya.

“Luh! Di kaya.  Mas love lang talaga kita”, paglalambing ko naman.

A month after that incident however, Kiwi suddenly turned cold on me…  laging wala sa bahay nila, madalang ng tumawag,  di na rin gasinong nagtetext. Kaya naman ng minsang nawalan kami ng training dahil may meeting ang coaching staff, I did not hesitate na abangan sya sa labas ng bahay nila.

“Ei, what’s the matter? Have I done something wrong?”, I followed her as she was heading  to her car.

“Nothing! Look, I’m in a rush. I have an important appointment and I’m running late. So can you just get out of my way?”, she walked faster that I had to run to keep up with her.

“Not now, Ara.  Huwag mo kong kulitin ngayon. I’ll call… I’ll talk to you later”, she said as she turned the ignition key.

Be sure to do that”, then I left.  It wasn’t typical of Kiwi to act like that. Ang sungit! Muka syang nasapian ng kung sino. Hey! She dropped something…

I would have run after her but she was far already. Hmmm… a calling card--- Dr. Myra Agbayani, Neuro Surgeon, Cathedral Heights Building, St. Luke’s Medical Center.I had a feeling this may answer my questions.

I had my chance the following week.  Walang training. Tapos half-day lang ang class ko. I decided to visit the mysterious doctor in the calling card. Ang layo ha. Pero I was so determined to have my questions answered now. Di din sya busy that was why she was able to accomodate me.  I would not forget what she said to me.

“… Kiwi was diagnosed with brain cancer in NZ. She underwent surgery, chemotheraphy and radiation.  She was in remission for 2 years.  But a month ago, she underwent several tests for her headaches and we found out that the brain cancer recurred. What's worst, this time it spread to her bones and lungs too. There is nothing much we can do except lessen the pain she is feeling.  She has very little time to live.”
