Rin was horrifed at what she saw.

She had wandered into Sunagakure hoping to find Gaara.

Sure, she had found the little redhead.

She found something else, too, however.

As the little boy was pushed, kicked, and mocked, the kunoichi felt a poisonous anger bubble up in her. She hadn't felt it in the longest time.

She didn't think. She didn't have time to.

Stepping forward, Rin raised an arm to chest level. Chakra built up in her palm.

"You'll be sorry," she whispered.

~~~~~~~~~~~
Gaara barely had strength to cover his face anymore, let alone process why the floor suddenly exploded.
He was gathered up by strong arms and held close.
Only one person would ever do that for him.
"Rin onee-chan..." he whispered.
~~~~~~~~~~~

"Hey, Gaara-kun. You alright?" Rin held a cup of warm water gently to the boy's lips as he stirred, propping him up against her own body.

"Onee-chan..." Eyes glimmering turquoise looked up at her wearily, a little bleary from sleep.

Too tired for a child.

"Yep. You're okay now, Gaara-kun."

Weakly, the redhead leaned against her. A soft sigh escaped his lips as he battled his untrusting conscience.

Rin could see it in his eyes.

He so, so wanted to trust someone.

She held him close.

~~~~~~~~~~~
"Rin onee-chan," Gaara said quietly. "What happened to the other kids?"
He watched as chocolate orbs swiveled to look at him, surprised. Then, her eyes softened and she smiled.
"It wasn't much, really. I just used a small justu and shook the floor so they would stop hurting you. Don't worry, 'kay? At most, they just have scratches and bruises."
He nodded tiredly, admiring the kunoichi for how she ensured justice in a way that didn't overdo things.
"Thanks," Gaara whispered.
Her smile was the best thing he received that month.
But then, something succeeded it.
"Hey, Gaara-kun... How would you like coming back to Konoha with me?"
~~~~~~~~~~~

The first time she had met Gaara, out of all the closer villages he could have ended up in, the little boy had lost his way and wound up in Konoha.

He also had the rotten luck of almost running into a rogue ninja.

Still, Rin was glad she had met him that day.

As she took his small hand in hers and gently led him to the Hokage Tower, she thought back to their conversation from the day before.

Little Gaara had asked about the kids who hurt him. At first, the medic had thought he wanted to make sure they got what they deserved. However, when she saw the concern in his eyes, she had changed her response.
