Chapter 3 ~ The Tenth Best Friend

Obito wondered why Rin suddenly had a little redhead in tow. 

Kakashi wondered why she, after a few days of having that little redhead in tow, suddenly looked very annoyed and grouchy.  

Minato felt bad every time she glared at him. 

Yet, today, her temper was even worse. 

Maybe it wasn't her temper. 

There just seemed, atop her anger, a layer of bitter anguish. 

"Rin, the scowl will be permanent-" 

"Shut up!" The Hatake flinched. Rin never snapped at Obito. 

Well, she never snapped at anyone. 

"I'm outta here. Gaara-kun, let's go." 

The three watched her go helplessly, two not knowing what was happening nor how to help and one knowing everything that was happening but was utterly helpless. 

"Argh," they all groaned. 

"When'd she finally become a normal woman?" Obito complained.

"Gaara-kun, onee-chan has to go see some friends. Could you stay put for me?" 

Turquoise met her chocolate orbs, scared. 

"I-I don't wanna..." The boy curled into a ball. "I don't wanna be alone." 

Rin blinked, taken aback. 

For her, the feeling of "alone" was constant. So constant, in fact, that she had gotten used to it. 

It was the perfect description of her past half a year in Konoha. 

But it was different for Gaara. He still felt the loneliness.

That meant she could still heal him. 

"Gaara-kun..." the medic began. "Okay, how about this..."

A chestnut-haired boy knocked his chair over in excitement. 

"She's here!" he exclaimed, jumping up and down. "Jin's here!" 

Before the other kids at the table had a chance to react, he jumped up and rushed up to her, gathering the bewildered girl in his arms. 

"J-Jun!" she stammered. 

"Heya, imouto." 

Then, Itachi heard the familiar huff of silent laughter he had missed so much. 

"I thought we agreed last time that I could be the older sibling this time," Rin said.

"Let's see... This one with the red eyes is Hidan." 

"H-How'd you know?!" 

"Who else is as bloodthirsty as you are? You look like a vampire." 

The little boy with black hair and blazing red eyes pumped his fist victoriously. 

"Yes! That's the look I was going for!"
