Chapter 4
"Trying to run away is useless. I control this house," the man said casually.
But I didn't stay to hear the rest of his speech. I was already running back the way I came.
When I was near the door, I let myself slow down, panting for breath, until suddenly I stopped, thinking about what the man just said. What did he mean he controlled this house? I looked back. If he controlled this house, did that mean he put my parents here? My cousin? Was that why I was here?
Was he controlling the deaths of my family?
I couldn't get over that. I couldn't just run away like I had so many times tonight. Frankly, I was getting sick of wandering around this house, not knowing where to go, and I was tired. I needed answers, and there was only one way to get them. I turned around and walked back, where he was now standing facing away from me. I asked his back, "What do you want from me?"
He chuckled. "One thing. Help me come back to life."
Wait. If he's dead... What the hell? "Am I dead?!"
"Well, since you asked, I am required to say yes."
"How did I die?" I asked as Ih stared in shock at the man.
"Someone killed you... I killed you." he answered, looking amused.
"Why?!" I asked as the man turned around.
"I killed you because I have to take somebody else's soul to come back to life." he replied calmly, like nothing could faze him.
Now that he was in the light, I could see that he looked to be about twenty, with dark brown hair. Half of his face was burned. He had a long scar running from his eyebrow to his cheek, and he was wearing an eyepatch. I stared in horror as I realized that whatever had cut him had obviously also taken out his eye. His face was also grotesquely misshapen. I stared at him, mesmerized by the burns scarring half his face. Maybe he could get plastic surgery. Perhaps the cheerleaders at school could teach him some lessons? I snapped out of my inner off-subject and asked in a bitter voice, "Why me?"
"I chose you because you're just like me." he responded, walking in slow circles around me.
