Chapter 10
I was in my room at home. I loved it. It was huge, and had delicately stenciled flowers on the walls. I closed my eyes, and enjoyed the feeling of peace I always got when I was in my room. But something didn't feel right. I felt like someome was watching me. I opened my eyes, and saw my parents and my sister next to my bed, all looking at me.
"Oh, hey?" I asked, confused.
"You killed us," they said in unison. Then, I saw the look in their eyes. Empty, lifeless. Dead.
I suddenly remembered everything. The mansion. Finding their dead bodies. James.
I woke with a start, tears in my eyes. My parents had died because of me, because James wanted to know if I had the courage to help him. But that wasn't necessary, I would've helped him voluntarily if I had known, if it meant keeping my family safe. I wondered what would happen to me if I really did come hack to life. I was only sixteen. What would I do? Would my sister be with me? She was thirteen. I'd have to take care of her. Wait... Where was she right now? She had been in the library last night, before I freaked out about sleep.
"Oh, crap. I abandoned my sister in a library!" I exclaimed, my eyes wide. I ran into the walk-in closet, and got dressed. Skinny jeans, a flowing top and flats. Very comfortable.
I walked out the door. I suddenly stopped when I realized I didn't know where to go. James had been leading last night, and I had been too tired to notice where we were going. I turned towards one side of the hallway. I sighed. There goes my heroic plan.
"Morning," someone said behind me.
I yelped and whirled around. James was standing right behind me, so close I could feel his breath on my face. How had I not noticed him?
"What the hell, James!" I said indignantly, looking up at him. Dang it, he was tall. And also way too close for comfort. I backed away a few steps.
"Sorry. Did I startle you?" He flashed a smile.
"Butthole," I muttered.
"Hey! Hurtful!" he protested.
"Fuck off, you just killed my parents. Also, I just remembered, my sister? In the library? Do you mind leading me back there so I can bring her in a room or something?" I asked.
"Already done. I carried her in last night," he said simply. "She's right next door to you," he tilted his head toward the door to my right. "I don't know what's wrong with her though. She's still unconscious, but I don't think she's in a coma." I frowned. "But there's not much
you can do for her right now."
"I'm still going in to see her," I said. I turned and walked to her door. I went inside.
After ten minutes of just staring at her and wishing she would wake up, I went back out into the hallway. James was leaning against the wall, looking bored.
"You done?"
"Yep," I sighed. At that moment, my stomach grumbled.
He smirked. "Let's go eat. You sound hungry. I'll cook," he suggested.
I stared at him. "You can cook? Or are you going to poison me?"
"Nope. I'm an amazing cook," he boasted as he walked down the hallway.
I rolled my eyes, and followed him. I tried to remember where we went this time. We went into a kitchen, and James led me to the table.
"Sit," he ordered.
He went to cook while I tapped my fingers on the table. The smell wafted towards me and my mouth watered. It smelled amazing. Maybe he really could cook, I thought grinning. Woo! I might not even get poisoned!
"Emma, why'd you just cheer?" James asked suspiciously, his back still turned.
"Oh. Did I say that aloud?"
"Yep."
"Oops. Are you done yet? I'm hungry," I whined like a four year old.
"So demanding," I heard him mutter. He brought two heaping plates full of pancakes and forks over.
"Oh my God. It smells like heaven." I grabbed a fork and started shoveling food in my mouth. I almost died, it was so good. After almost choking, I waited until I finished chewing and asked, "So is there anyone else here? Or is it just us?"
"Well... There is someone here with us, but he could be anywhe--"
"What's up, people!" an enthusiastic voice yelled out.
"And there he is," James muttered.
