Nick
My dream ended, abruptly, when I was woken up by crying. Not my kids crying, but my wife crying, which was always alarming. I opened my eyes & saw Demi leaning against the headboard, looking through a photo album. She was crying pretty hard, actually, so now I was worried. I rolled onto my side & put my hand between her thighs. "Baby, what's wrong?" I asked.
Demi looked down at me, wiping at her tears as she sniffed & her body shivered a little. "They start kindergarten in an hour and a half." She choked out.
I tried not to laugh as I sat up to sit next to her, leaning my shoulder on hers. I looked down at the album on her lap & smiled at the adorable photos of the twins, from a few years before. Where had the time gone? They were about to start kindergarten. I couldn't believe it, myself. "It's kindergarten, babe. It's not like Mercy is getting married or Jerry's going off to war." I smiled at her as she pouted at me.
Demi sighed, slamming the album shut. She leaned over to put the album back in her nightstand drawer & I had to reach out & put my hand on her ass. She scowled over her shoulder at me & I couldn't help but to laugh. "What are you doing?" She asked, sitting up again. She wiped at her tears with her shirt.
"Feeling my wife's beautiful ass. What are you doing besides freaking out for no reason?"
Demi rolled her eyes, then turned to face me, crossing her legs, Indian style. "It's not for no reason, Nick." Demi's tone was serious so I took a deep breath & sat up straight.
"Okay, why are you freaking out?"
"They're starting school." Demi whined.
"Yes. I am aware of this. I was there when we registered them."
"What if they don't make any friends?" She stuck her lower lip out a little.
I let out a laugh. "Have you met our children? They make friends wherever we go. Besides they have friends in the neighborhood & most of these kids go to their school."
"But the twins won't be together. They're in different classes."
"Yes & that's a good thing. They need to be away from each other sometimes. It's not healthy if they only have each other."
"They aren't always together." Demi's pout was even bigger now. "I just want Mercy to have her brother there to protect her if she needs it."
I laughed again. "Protect her from what? Killer crayons?"
Demi shrugged her shoulders & looked down at her hands in her lap. "I don't know." She took in a deep breath, then let it out slowly. "Bullies? Mean girls?"
I rolled my eyes. "Baby, I don't think it will start in kindergarten. Besides, their school has a zero tolerance for bullying."
Now Demi rolled her eyes. "Like that can stop it completely."
"I really don't think we need to worry about bullies in kindergarten, Demi."
"Nick, it can happen at any age. Kids are mean at all ages." Demi said in a firm voice, shaking her head.
"Let's not worry about this. You don't want to waste energy on that when we have two kindergartners to get ready for school." I raised my eyebrows at her.
